The King We’ve Been Waiting For

04/27/2025

“Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
—Luke 19:38 (NIV)

Have you ever waited for something so long that when it finally arrived, you could hardly believe it was real? Maybe it was the acceptance letter, the long-anticipated wedding day, or the birth of a child. Joy fills your heart, and your lips can’t help but shout in celebration. This is the kind of explosive joy we see in today’s verse.

As Jesus entered Jerusalem riding on a donkey, the people recognized that He wasn’t just another teacher or prophet, He was the King. Centuries of prophecies were coming alive before their very eyes. The words they cried out, “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” echoed the messianic hope that had lived in their hearts for generations.

Imagine the scene: the streets packed with people laying down their cloaks, waving palm branches, children on their fathers’ shoulders, voices lifted in passionate celebration. It wasn’t just a parade, it was a declaration. The true King, the long-promised Savior, had finally come. Yet, this King wasn’t arriving on a warhorse to conquer armies; He came on a humble donkey to conquer hearts.

The beauty of this moment reminds us that God’s promises may take time, but they are always fulfilled. The crowds praised Jesus with words of peace and glory, perhaps not fully understanding that He was bringing peace not by force but by sacrifice. His path to glory would be through a rugged cross, not a golden throne, at least, not yet.

How often do we, like the crowds, cheer for Jesus when He meets our expectations but fall silent when His plan looks different from ours?
The King we celebrate is not the king we invent, He is infinitely better: a King of mercy, peace, humility, and unstoppable love.

A friend of mine once shared how he had prayed for years for God to bring healing to his broken family. When reconciliation finally came, it didn’t look like the movie-ending he had envisioned. It was messy, slow, and full of tears. Yet, through it all, God revealed a deeper healing, not just fixing the relationships but changing the hearts involved.
Just like the people of Jerusalem, he learned that God’s deliverance may not always match our imagination, but it exceeds our deepest need.

Here are a few examples of what you can do today to help you on your journey.

Praise Today And Always
Take five minutes to praise Jesus for who He is, not just what He does for you.

Lay Down a Cloak
Symbolically, what is something you can “lay down” before Jesus today, a fear, a dream, a burden?

Declare Him King
Boldly declare Jesus as King in one area of your life where you’ve been holding back control.

Today, celebrate Jesus not just as a rescuer from your troubles but as the King who deserves your trust, your praise, and your heart, even when His way looks different than yours. Let your life declare, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!”

King Jesus, blessed are You who came in the name of the Lord! You are worthy of all my praise. Forgive me when I try to mold You into my expectations instead of surrendering to Your perfect plan. Help me to lay down my life in worship and walk in the peace and glory You bring. Reign in my heart today and every day. May my life shout Your goodness and Your faithfulness until the day I see You face to face. Amen.
