Honoring One Another In Love

01/20/2025

“Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.”
– Romans 12:10 (NIV)

In this single verse, Paul gives us a profound yet practical expression of what it means to live as a follower of Christ in community. Love and honor are the hallmarks of relationships that reflect the heart of God. Today, let us reflect deeply on this call to devotion and honor.

Be Devoted to One Another in Love

The word “devoted” suggests more than casual affection or occasional acts of kindness. It speaks of a steadfast, loyal commitment. Paul is urging us to prioritize relationships within the body of Christ, not merely out of obligation, but as an outpouring of the love God has shown us. Just as Jesus modeled sacrificial love, we are called to care for one another with an unwavering dedication that seeks the other person’s highest good.

Take a moment to reflect: Are you devoted to others in the way Paul describes? Do your actions reflect a deep, abiding commitment to the well-being of your family, friends, and fellow believers?

Honor One Another Above Yourselves

To honor someone means to esteem and value them highly, recognizing their worth as someone created in the image of God. But Paul takes it a step further: we are to honor others above ourselves. This requires humility—a willingness to lay down our pride, preferences, and even rights for the sake of lifting others up.

Jesus perfectly embodied this mindset. In Philippians 2:3-4, Paul says, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”

Who in your life might you need to honor more intentionally today? Is there someone you’ve overlooked or taken for granted? Ask God to show you practical ways to put their needs above your own.

Living It Out

When we are devoted to one another in love and honor others above ourselves, we create a culture of grace and encouragement that reflects the kingdom of God. Imagine a community where each person seeks to uplift and serve the other. That is the picture Paul paints here—one that stands in stark contrast to the self-centeredness of the world.

Here are three ways you can live out Romans 12:10 today:

Speak life
Use your words to build someone up. A simple affirmation or expression of gratitude can honor them and reflect God’s love.

Serve willingly
Look for opportunities to meet someone’s needs, even if it requires personal sacrifice.

Pray intentionally
Ask God to bless and strengthen the people in your life, and seek His guidance in showing them honor.

Let today be a day where love and honor define your actions. Who can you uplift, serve, or celebrate? Begin now.

Father, thank You for the love You have shown us through Christ. Help us to reflect that love by being devoted to one another and honoring others above ourselves. Teach us to see the worth in each person You have placed in our lives. Give us the humility to serve, the grace to forgive, and the courage to put others first. May our relationships glorify You and point others to the beauty of Your kingdom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
