Dwelling in the Shelter of the Most High

03/09/2025

“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’”
- Psalm 91:1-2 NIV

Psalm 91 is one of the most comforting passages in Scripture, a reminder of God’s divine protection over those who trust in Him. These opening verses invite us into an intimate relationship with God, a place of refuge and security in His presence.

The word “dwells” in verse 1 is key. It implies more than just a visit or a fleeting encounter with God. It speaks of remaining, abiding, and making our home in Him. This is not a hurried prayer in times of trouble, but a life spent seeking and trusting Him daily. When we choose to dwell in His presence, we position ourselves under His protection, much like a bird nestling safely under the shadow of its mother’s wings.

The psalmist also calls God “the Most High” (El Elyon) and “the Almighty” (El Shaddai), names that highlight His supreme authority and unmatched power. When we acknowledge who God is, our hearts find peace. He is not just a distant deity; He is our refuge and our fortress, strong, reliable, and unshakable.

Think about a fortress. It is built to withstand attacks, standing tall and impenetrable. God is that fortress for us. The storms of life may rage, but when we dwell in Him, we remain secure. He is not just a temporary shelter but a permanent stronghold for our souls.

Consider these questions as you meditate on today’s scripture reading. Let the Holy Spirit guide you.

Where are you dwelling?
Are you making God your place of security, or are you placing your trust in things that can fade or fail?

Do you rest in the shadow of the Almighty?
Or are you restless, trying to fight battles on your own?

Take time today to reaffirm your trust in God. Speak the words of verse 2 aloud: “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Let it be a declaration over your fears, worries, and uncertainties.

Heavenly Father, thank You for being my refuge and fortress. Help me to dwell in Your presence daily, not just in moments of crisis, but in every part of my life. Teach me to rest under Your shadow, trusting in Your strength and protection. No matter what comes my way, I declare today that You are my God, and in You, I place my trust. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
