The Word Was God

03/18/2025

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
— John 1:1 (NIV)

The Gospel of John begins with a breathtaking declaration of Christ’s divinity. Before time, before creation, before anything that we know existed…..the Word was. John is intentional in his wording, echoing Genesis 1:1: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” But here, we learn something even more profound: the One who spoke creation into existence is not just God’s voice; He is God Himself.

John calls Jesus “the Word” (Greek: Logos), a term loaded with meaning. In Greek philosophy, Logos was the divine reason that ordered the universe. In Hebrew thought, God’s Word was His creative and active power. John bridges both understandings and proclaims: Jesus is the eternal expression of God. He was not created. He did not come into being at a certain point in time. He has always existed.

This truth challenges us to consider the depth of Jesus’ identity. He is not just a teacher, a prophet, or a moral leader, He is the eternal, preexistent God who became flesh. When we read the Gospels, we are not just reading about a historical figure; we are encountering the living God.

Here are a few ways for you to apply this fact to your life today?

Anchor Your Faith in Christ’s Divinity
Recognizing Jesus as God changes everything. He is not just a part of your life; He is life itself. Worship Him as such today.

Trust the Word in Every Season
If Jesus is the eternal Logos, His Word carries unshakable authority. Whatever situation you face, trust that the Word of God has power over it.

Live in Awe of the Incarnation
The eternal God became human for you. Let that reality humble you and fill you with gratitude.

Take a moment today to meditate on the magnitude of Christ’s eternal existence. Read John 1:1-5 and ask God to deepen your understanding of who Jesus is. Let this truth shape the way you worship and live.

Heavenly Father, thank You for revealing Yourself through Jesus, the eternal Word. Help me to grasp the depth of who He is and to live in reverence of His majesty. May I trust in Your Word with all my heart, knowing that the same power that created the universe sustains me today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
