A Heart That Seeks God

03/16/2025

“One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.”
- Psalm 27:4 NIV

David, a man of war, a king, and a leader, could have asked God for many things, victory over enemies, wealth, security, or power. But here, in in our words today, his heart reveals its deepest longing: to dwell in the presence of God.

This verse reflects an unshakable priority. David understood that true security, peace, and fulfillment are not found in earthly success but in intimacy with God. He didn’t just want to visit God’s presence occasionally; he wanted to dwell there, to make it his home.

We live in a world that constantly demands our attention. Our schedules are packed, our responsibilities weigh heavy, and distractions pull us in every direction. But David’s words call us to refocus: What is the “one thing” we seek?

Is it success in our careers?
A comfortable life?
Approval from others?
Or is it the presence of God?

David desired to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord, not just to seek God’s hand (what He can do for us), but to seek His face (who He is). When we truly behold God, His goodness, His mercy, His holiness, He transforms us. His presence brings clarity in confusion, peace in chaos, and joy in the midst of trials.

If someone were to look at your life, what would they say is your “one thing”? Today, take a moment to reset your heart’s priorities. Make space to dwell in God’s presence. It could be through prayer, worship, or simply sitting in silence, acknowledging His beauty and faithfulness.

God is not distant or unreachable. He invites us to seek Him daily, and He promises to reveal Himself to those who do. Let us be like David, seeking after the only One who truly satisfies.

Father, my heart longs for You above all else. Teach me to seek You with my whole heart, to find joy in Your presence, and to make You my highest priority. Let my life reflect a deep love for You, not just in words, but in how I live each day. Help me to gaze upon Your beauty and be transformed by Your presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
