Trusting God’s Plans

01/22/2025

Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.”
– Proverbs 19:21 (NIV)

Our days often begin with carefully laid plans: to-do lists, meetings, goals, and dreams for the future. Planning is not inherently wrong, scripture even encourages diligence and wisdom in how we steward our time (Proverbs 21:5). Yet, this verse reminds us of a humbling truth: no matter how much we strategize, only God’s purposes will ultimately stand.

This truth can bring both discomfort and comfort. It’s uncomfortable because we like control. We want to believe our plans will lead to success, fulfillment, or security. But it’s comforting because God’s plans are rooted in His perfect wisdom, love, and sovereignty. While we only see fragments of the picture, He sees the entire masterpiece.

Consider the story of Joseph in Genesis. His dreams of leadership were met with betrayal, slavery, and imprisonment. From a human perspective, his life seemed to be derailed. Yet, God’s purpose prevailed. Joseph rose to a position of authority in Egypt, not for his own glory but to preserve his family and countless others during a famine. What seemed like interruptions were, in fact, divine appointments.

When our plans fall apart or take unexpected turns, it’s tempting to question God’s goodness or wisdom. But this verse invites us to trust that His purpose is better than anything we could imagine or orchestrate ourselves. His plans are not just for our good but for His glory.

Here are three steps you can take to help you on this journey of surrendering our plans to Jesus.

Surrender Your Agenda
Start your day by laying your plans before the Lord. Pray for His guidance and ask Him to align your heart with His purposes.

Reflect on Disruptions
When things don’t go as planned, instead of frustration, pause and ask, “Lord, what are You teaching me? How can I honor You in this moment?”

Celebrate God’s Sovereignty
Look back on a time when your plans didn’t work out but God’s purpose was evident. Let it remind you of His faithfulness.

Let today be a day of surrender. Trust that the Lord’s purpose is not only prevailing—it is good.

Lord, thank You that Your plans are perfect, even when I don’t understand them. Help me to trust Your purpose above my own desires. When my plans falter or change, give me the faith to see Your hand at work and the courage to follow wherever You lead. Teach me to rest in Your sovereignty and to find peace in knowing You are in control. In Jesus’ name, amen.
