The Knock at Your Heart’s Door

03/19/2025

“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.”
— Revelation 3:20 (NIV)

Imagine hearing a gentle knock at your front door. It’s not forceful, not demanding, but persistent. You pause, wondering who it could be. When you check, you see Jesus standing there, waiting. He isn’t breaking the door down, nor is He turning away in frustration. Instead, He knocks, patiently longing for you to respond.

This verse is often seen as an invitation to the unbeliever, a call for salvation. But consider the context: Jesus is speaking to the church in Laodicea, a congregation that had grown spiritually complacent, lukewarm in their faith. They had shut Jesus out, not intentionally, perhaps, but through self-sufficiency, distraction, and a loss of fervent devotion.

How often do we do the same? We fill our days with busyness, plans, and ambitions, leaving little room for intimacy with Christ. Yet, He stands at the door of our hearts, longing for fellowship. This isn’t just about conversion; it’s about communion. Jesus desires more than just a place in our belief system. He wants to dine with us, to share in the deepest parts of our lives.

In biblical times, sharing a meal signified relationship and closeness. Jesus isn’t offering a transactional encounter; He’s inviting us into a daily, abiding fellowship. He knocks not just once but continually, waiting for us to open the door in surrender, to invite Him into every aspect of our hearts, our joys, our struggles, our fears, and our dreams.

Here are a few things to help you focus on today’s lesson.

Listen for His knock.
Are there areas of your life where Jesus is calling for deeper intimacy?

Examine your spiritual temperature.
Have you grown lukewarm in your faith?

Open the door.
Spend time in His presence today, through prayer, worship, or meditating on His Word.

Jesus is not distant. He is near, knocking, waiting. Will you let Him in?

Lord Jesus, I hear You knocking at the door of my heart. Forgive me for the times I have shut You out with my distractions and self-reliance. Today, I open the door to You. Come in and make Yourself at home in my life. Stir my heart to burn with passion for You once again. In Your name, Amen.
