Roots That Never Run Dry

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him.”
—Jeremiah 17:7 NIV

Trust is a powerful thing. It’s the foundation of every meaningful relationship, the anchor in the storms of life. But when trust is misplaced in people, possessions, or plans, it can leave us disappointed and disillusioned. Jeremiah was writing to a people who had put their trust in earthly kings, foreign alliances, and false gods. But here, he gives a clear and compelling contrast: “Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him.”

The Hebrew word for “blessed” carries the idea of being deeply joyful and secure, even when circumstances are unstable. It’s not about a life free from trouble, but a life full of confidence that God is steady when everything else shifts.

Imagine a tree planted by a river, its roots deep in the soil, drawing constant nourishment. Even in drought, it stays green. That’s the picture Jeremiah paints just one verse later. The one who trusts in the Lord is not just surviving, they’re thriving.

This reminds me of a time in my life where we walked through a devastating job loss and a season of financial insecurity. I didn’t know how things would turn out, but I knew who was holding me. My wife and I clung to Jeremiah 17:7 like a lifeline. Today, we share that story as a  testimony of how God sustained us, not by changing our situation quickly, but by strengthening our hearts daily.

The world urges us to trust in what we can see. Bank accounts, job titles, or personal abilities. But these are shallow wells that run dry. God invites us to place our full confidence in Him, the unchanging, ever-faithful One who sees the full picture and works all things for our good.

Here are a few ways you can developed this life of trust.

Reflect
Ask yourself, where am I placing my trust right now?

Read
Meditate on Jeremiah 17:7–8. Visualize the tree rooted by the water.

Pray
Write down three areas of life where you need to trust God more fully.

Act

Take one step of obedience today that reflects trust in God over your own plan.
Place your full confidence in God today, no backup plans, no safety nets. Speak this verse aloud throughout the day and let it remind you that blessing flows when trust is placed in the One who never fails.

Father, I admit that too often I place my trust in things that cannot hold me. Today, I choose to put my confidence in You. Help me to be like the tree planted by the water, steady, nourished, and strong. When fear tries to take root, remind me that You are faithful and true. Grow my trust, Lord, and teach me to rest in Your promises. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
