A House Divided

01/26/2025

“If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.” – Mark 3:25 (NIV)

Jesus spoke the words in today’s verse in response to the accusations that He was driving out demons by the power of Satan. His point was clear: unity is essential for strength and purpose, whether in a family, a church, or even in the unseen spiritual realm. A house divided cannot thrive—it will crumble under the weight of conflict and disunity.

This verse invites us to reflect on the areas of our lives that may be fractured or in conflict. Is there disunity in your relationships, home, or workplace? Perhaps it’s an inner division within your own heart—between faith and doubt, between what you know is right and the temptations that pull you away.

Division, whether external or internal, weakens us. It drains our energy, distracts us from our purpose, and makes us vulnerable to further attack. But Jesus offers us a better way. He calls us to unity: unity in our families, in our churches, and above all, in our relationship with Him.

In your home, unity begins with humility and forgiveness. Where there are wounds, seek healing. Where there is misunderstanding, seek clarity. In the church, unity is rooted in love and shared purpose. We are called to build one another up, not tear each other down. And in our hearts, unity comes through surrender to the Lord, allowing His Spirit to align our desires and actions with His will.

Here are three was to apply this to your life today.

Examine your relationships
Is there a relationship in your life that feels divided or strained? Take a moment to pray about it and ask God for wisdom on how to begin reconciliation.

Unite your heart
Are you wrestling with inner conflict? Spend time with God, asking Him to align your heart with His. Seek His guidance through His Word.

Foster unity in your church
Think about how you can promote unity in your church or community. Can you encourage someone, resolve a misunderstanding, or serve in a new way?

Today, take one step toward unity, whether it’s making a phone call to mend a relationship, volunteering at church, or spending time in prayer to align your heart with God’s will. Remember, a united house is a strong house.

Lord, You are the God of peace and unity. Help me to identify and address any areas of division in my life. Heal broken relationships, restore harmony where there is strife, and unite my heart to fear Your name. May my life reflect the unity of Your Spirit, and may my home, my church, and my heart stand firm in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
