Don’t Forget His Benefits

04/01/2025

“Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits—”
- Psalm 103:2 NIV

It’s easy to praise God when life is going well. When the bills are paid, the family is healthy, and the job is secure, gratitude flows effortlessly. But this psalm is a powerful reminder that praise should not be circumstantial, it should be intentional. David speaks to his own soul and commands it to remember what God has done. Why? Because forgetfulness is a subtle thief of faith.

We often remember what hurt us and forget what helped us. We hold onto offenses and let go of blessings. But David flips the script. He instructs his soul to praise and to not forget God’s benefits. That word “benefits” points to the ongoing, personal, and generous ways God shows His love. He forgives, He heals, He redeems, He crowns, and He satisfies.

Consider a moment in your life when God came through for you. Maybe it was a breakthrough in a hard season, an unexpected provision, or a moment of peace that made no sense. Those are the benefits David wants us to recall. When we remember God’s past faithfulness, it fuels our present praise and builds our future trust.

Think of a parent who keeps a “memory jar” filled with notes about their children’s milestones and sweet moments. On hard days, they pull out those notes to remind themselves of what truly matters. David is telling us to do the same with God, create a memory jar of His goodness.

Here are some things you can do today to help you remember all of His benefits.

Make a list of at least five benefits or blessings God has given you, recent ones and those long ago.

Speak to your soul like David did. Declare praise out loud even if you don’t feel like it.

Share a testimony of one of God’s benefits with someone today to encourage their faith.

Start a “Gratitude Journal” and build a habit of writing down God’s benefits regularly.

Be intentional about remembering. Each time your mind drifts to frustration or fear today, redirect it by praising God for one specific benefit He’s given you. Let praise be your pattern.

Father, I praise You today with all that I am. Forgive me for the times I’ve forgotten Your faithfulness. Help me to remember and reflect on Your goodness every single day. Stir my heart to gratitude and remind me that even in hard times, You are still worthy of praise. Let my soul never forget the depth of Your mercy, the beauty of Your grace, and the power of Your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
