The Sacrifice That Pleases God

03/20/2025

“And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.”
– Hebrews 13:16 (NIV)

When we think of sacrifices, we often picture something costly, something given up, sometimes with difficulty. In the Old Testament, sacrifices were physical. They were offerings of animals, grain, or incense as an act of worship. But in the New Covenant, God calls us to a different kind of sacrifice, one that is lived out daily in our actions toward others.

Today’s verse reminds us that doing good and sharing with others is a spiritual act of worship. These are not mere acts of kindness but offerings that rise before God as a pleasing aroma. This means that every time we extend generosity, every time we choose kindness over indifference, every time we share with someone in need, we are engaging in an act of worship that brings delight to our Heavenly Father.

But let’s be honest, for some of us, doing good and sharing isn’t always easy. Sometimes it’s inconvenient. Other times, it requires us to give from a place of personal sacrifice. Maybe you’re exhausted, but a friend needs encouragement. Maybe finances are tight, but you feel prompted to bless someone in need. Or maybe you’re carrying your own burdens, yet God is calling you to be present for someone else. These moments are not just random opportunities; they are divine invitations to partner with God in His work.

Jesus Himself exemplified this sacrificial generosity. He didn’t just give what was comfortable; He gave everything. His time, His love, and ultimately, His life. He calls us to follow in His footsteps, not because He demands it, but because in giving, we reflect His heart.

When we shift our perspective to see generosity and service as acts of worship rather than obligations, something changes within us. Instead of feeling drained, we find joy. Instead of feeling burdened, we feel purpose. Instead of feeling empty, we discover the deep satisfaction that comes from aligning our hearts with God’s.

Here are a few ways for you to apply this to your own life and work towards a life of generous giving.

Examine Your Heart
Do you see kindness and generosity as a duty, or as an opportunity to worship God? Ask the Lord to help you shift your perspective.

Look for Divine Appointments
Throughout your day, be attentive to moments where God might be nudging you to help someone, whether through a word of encouragement, a helping hand, or an unexpected gift.

Give Without Fear
Sometimes we hold back from generosity because we fear lack. But God is a provider. Trust that when you live with open hands, He will fill them again.

Reflect on Jesus’ Sacrifice
Meditate on the ways Jesus gave of Himself. Ask Him to help you embody that same selflessness in your daily life.

Find one way to intentionally bless someone today, especially in a way that requires some level of personal sacrifice. Maybe it’s your time, resources, or a simple act of kindness. As you do, remember that your gift is not just for them, it is a sacrifice that pleases God.

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me that doing good and sharing with others is not just an obligation, but a beautiful act of worship. Help me to live with an open heart and open hands, willing to give even when it costs me something. May my life reflect Your generosity, and may my sacrifices bring You joy. Teach me to trust that as I give, You will provide. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
