Light in the Darkness
04/26/2025
“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.”
— Isaiah 9:2 (NIV)
Face it, darkness can feel overwhelming. Trapped, suffocating, no way out. Whether it’s the darkness of fear, grief, confusion, or sin, it has a way of settling into our hearts, making it hard to see the way forward. Today’s verse from Isaiah was written in a time when the people of Israel were under threat, lost in hopelessness, and wondering if God had forgotten them. Yet into that darkness, God spoke a promise: a great light was coming.
Imagine you are a traveler lost in a thick forest on a moonless night, stumbling and falling, unsure if you would ever find your way out. Suddenly, far ahead of you, a single beam of light pierces the shadows. Hope returns. You know you are not abandoned, you have a direction and a rescue.
This prophecy pointed directly to the coming of Jesus Christ, the Light of the World. The Gospel of John echoes this truth in chapter 1 verse 5: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” Jesus didn’t just shine light at us; He stepped into the darkness with us. He brought hope to the hopeless, sight to the blind, forgiveness to the sinner, and joy to the brokenhearted.
Sometimes our personal “darkness” can feel so thick that it seems impossible that light could ever reach us. But Isaiah reminds us that even in the deepest darkness, God’s light dawns. It is not something we can conjure up on our own, it is a gift that God sends. The Light breaks through not because we deserve it, but because God is full of mercy and love.
Think about the Christmas story: in a humble stable, unnoticed by much of the world, the Light of all lights entered in. It wasn’t grandiose by human standards, but it was enough to change everything forever.
Today, whatever darkness you are facing, remember this: the Light has already come. And it is still dawning, even now, in ways you may not yet see.
Here are some things you can do today to help on your path out of darkness.
Identify an area in your life where you feel darkness (fear, sadness, doubt) and invite Jesus’ light into it through prayer.
Spend time in Scripture today looking for verses about God’s light (John 8:12, Psalm 27:1, 2 Corinthians 4:6).
Be a light for someone else—offer an encouraging word, a listening ear, or a small act of kindness.
Reflect tonight: Where did you see glimpses of God’s light today?
Every time you notice darkness creeping into your thoughts, pause and say aloud: “The Light has come, and the darkness cannot overcome it.” Declare the truth of Isaiah’s words over your life today.
Father, thank You for sending Your Light into our darkness. Thank You for Jesus, who meets us where we are and leads us into hope. When we feel lost or overwhelmed, remind us that we are never alone. Your light is stronger than any darkness we face. Help us to walk in Your light today, and to reflect it to the world around us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
