Remain in Me
03/29/2025
“Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”
— John 15:4-5 (NIV)
Jesus speaks these words during His final moments with the disciples, knowing what lies ahead. He paints a picture not just of connection, but of absolute dependence, a vine and branches. In the same way a branch must draw its life and nourishment from the vine, so must we stay closely connected to Christ in order to live fruitful lives.
Have you ever tried to keep a cut flower alive? No matter how beautiful it is at first, once it’s severed from its roots, it’s only a matter of time before it fades. Jesus is saying the same is true for us spiritually. We can try to “look alive” for a little while, putting on appearances of joy, purpose, or productivity, but if we are not remaining in Him, our fruit will wither.
To “remain” or “abide,” as some translations say means more than just visiting Jesus on Sundays or saying a prayer when life gets tough. It’s about staying connected to Him daily. You can do this through His Word, in prayer, in worship, and by walking in obedience. This kind of abiding relationship produces fruit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Fruit that blesses others and glorifies God.
There’s also a sober truth in Jesus’ words: “Apart from me you can do nothing.” In our world that praises self-sufficiency and hustle, this is a humbling reminder. Our talents, our efforts, even our best intentions, if they’re not rooted in Him, will fall short of bearing lasting, eternal fruit.
Here are some ways to help you abide daily with Jesus.
Start Your Day with Jesus
Spend your first 15 minutes reading Scripture and praying before diving into your day.
Identify Disconnections
Are there areas of your life where you’ve drifted from God’s presence or will? Ask Him to draw you back.
Practice Dependence
Before making decisions or tackling tasks today, pause and ask the Lord for wisdom and strength.
Stay in Community
Connect with other believers who help you stay grounded and growing in Christ.
Ask yourself throughout the day: “Am I connected to the Vine right now?” Let this question guide your actions, thoughts, and responses. Choose to abide in Him moment by moment.
Lord Jesus, I confess how often I try to do things on my own. Thank You for the reminder that You are the vine and I am just a branch. Teach me to remain in You—to draw my strength, purpose, and life from You each day. Help me bear fruit that brings You glory. Prune away anything in me that hinders my growth. Keep me close to Your heart, always. In Your name, Amen.
