The Great Exchange

“God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
- 2 Corinthians 5:21 (NIV)

If you’ve ever tried to pay a debt you couldn’t afford, you know the feeling of helplessness. Now imagine someone stepping in not just to cover your debt but to take on your entire burden as if it were their own. This is the essence of what Paul shares in today’s writing. It’s one of the most powerful summaries of the gospel: Jesus Christ, who lived a perfect, sinless life, became sin on our behalf so that we might become the righteousness of God.

Let that sink in. Jesus didn’t just carry our sins, He became sin. All the shame, guilt, and punishment that should have fallen on us was absorbed by Him. And in return, we are clothed in His righteousness. It’s not a fair trade by earthly standards, it’s grace.

Think of it like this. Imagine a prisoner on death row, guilty beyond question, being told that someone else has not only taken their sentence but also given them their identity, a clean record, a new name, and a royal inheritance. That’s what Christ has done for us. He didn’t just pardon us; He gave us His position before God.

This truth should radically reshape how we see ourselves. We are no longer defined by our past mistakes or present struggles. We are seen by God as righteous—because we are in Christ. That’s not just good news; it’s the best news.

Here are a few things you can do to help yourself in applying today’s truth to your life.

Reflect on areas where you’re still carrying guilt or shame. Lay them at the foot of the cross.

Thank God daily for this divine exchange, make it a part of your prayer life.

Live like you are righteous. Let this truth affect your decisions, your relationships, and your self-image.

Share this good news with someone who needs hope and freedom.

Today, look in the mirror and remind yourself: “I am the righteousness of God in Christ.” Let this truth drive away self-doubt, shame, and fear. Walk confidently, not in your perfection, but in His.

Father, thank You for the incredible gift of grace through Jesus. Thank You that He who knew no sin became sin for me, so that I could become Your righteousness. Help me live in the freedom and confidence of this truth today. May I never forget the price paid or the love shown. Let my life reflect the beauty of this great exchange. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
