Peace That Cannot Be Shaken
02/23/2025
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
- John 14:27 (NIV)
As Jesus prepared His disciples for His departure, He left them with a gift, His peace. This wasn’t an empty farewell or a sentimental promise. It was a declaration of a divine reality, a peace rooted not in circumstances, but in His presence.
The peace Jesus gives is vastly different from the world’s version. The world’s peace is fleeting, dependent on external conditions, success, financial stability, or the absence of conflict. It is a fragile peace that can be shattered by a single bad day, an unexpected bill, or a difficult conversation. But the peace of Christ is unshakable because it is anchored in the eternal. It is a peace that remains even in the storm.
Consider the disciples. Soon after this promise, they would face fear, persecution, and uncertainty. Yet, this peace sustained them. It was the peace that allowed Paul to sing in a prison cell. It was the peace that carried Stephen as he forgave his persecutors while being stoned. It was the peace that emboldened countless believers throughout history to stand firm in their faith.
Jesus tells us “Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” This means we have a role in receiving His peace. We must choose to trust Him, to rest in His promises, and to surrender our anxieties to Him. Philippians 4:6-7 echoes this truth: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Here are a few questions for you to think about today as you work on discovering His true peace.
What areas of your life are currently causing you anxiety or fear?
How can you intentionally receive and rest in the peace that Jesus offers?
In what ways have you experienced God’s peace in the past, even in difficult situations?
Today, whatever is troubling your heart, be it uncertainty, fear, or stress, lay it before Jesus. His peace is available to you. It is a peace that goes beyond logic, a peace that can sustain you in hardship, and a peace that assures you that no matter what happens, He is with you.
Lord Jesus, thank You for the gift of Your peace. In a world full of turmoil, I need the unshakable peace that only You can give. Help me to trust in You, to release my worries, and to stand firm in the assurance of Your presence. May my heart not be troubled, and may I walk in the confidence that You are in control. In Your mighty name, Amen.
