The Harvest Is Ready…Are You?
04/10/2025
“Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.’”
—Matthew 9:37–38 (NIV)
Jesus had just been traveling from town to town, healing the sick, opening blind eyes, raising the dead, and preaching the good news of the kingdom. But it wasn’t the miracles that moved His heart most, it was the people. The verse right before today’s scripture said The crowds were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. And so, He turned to His disciples and pointed out the obvious truth: the harvest and the need is plentiful. The issue isn’t the size of the mission field; it’s the scarcity of willing workers.
Imagine standing in the middle of a golden wheat field, the grain swaying gently in the wind. It stretches as far as the eye can see, ripe and ready. But no one is out there gathering it in. That’s the image Jesus gives us. People all around us. Hurting, searching, longing for peace. They are ready for hope. They’re ready to hear the truth. But too few step forward to bring it.
Look at our society today. This passage is more relevant than ever before. So many are caught in anxiety, addiction, identity confusion, or just the weight of everyday life. We don’t need more church buildings or social media pages. We need workers. Real people willing to step out of their comfort zones and love like Jesus did.
Notice what Jesus says to do first: pray. Before organizing a strategy, before launching an outreach, we are to ask the Lord to send workers. But here’s the catch. When we pray this prayer sincerely, we often find ourselves becoming the answer. “Lord, send someone.” And God replies, “How about you?”
Maybe you’re a mom at home with kids. Maybe you’re a business leader, a teacher, a student, or someone who feels like your story doesn’t matter. But you are a worker. Every conversation, every act of kindness, every moment you speak life into someone, you are harvesting.
Here are a few things you can do to prepare yourself to be harvest ready.
Pray Matthew 9:38 every morning.
Ask God to raise up workers and be open to Him sending you.
Identify your field.
Who in your life is “harassed and helpless”? Co-workers, neighbors, family members? That’s your harvest.
Take one step this week. Encourage someone, share your testimony, or invite them to church or coffee. Start small, but start.
Step into the field. Whether you feel ready or not, God equips those He calls. Don’t underestimate the power of presence, listening, or a gentle word. The harvest is waiting and someone’s eternity may hinge on your willingness.
Lord of the harvest, I hear Your call today. I see the needs all around me, people hungry for truth, love, and hope. Stir my heart with compassion. Make me bold and obedient. Send more workers, God, and if You’re calling me, I say yes. Use me today in whatever way You choose. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
