The Mercy Seat of Grace
04/22/2025
“God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished.”
— Romans 3:25 (NIV)
In the Old Testament, the “mercy seat” was the cover of the Ark of the Covenant, where once a year, the high priest would sprinkle the blood of a sacrificed animal to atone for Israel’s sins. It was a sacred moment, a sobering reminder that sin demanded justice, and that only the shedding of blood could bring atonement.
But in today’s verse, Paul tells us something revolutionary: God presented Christ, not an animal, not a symbolic gesture, but His own Son, as the once-and-for-all sacrifice of atonement. The Greek word used here for “atonement” is hilastērion, the same word used for “mercy seat.” In other words, Jesus became the mercy seat. He is now the meeting place between a holy God and sinful humanity.
This verse unveils both the justice and mercy of God. Justice, because sin could not go unpunished. Mercy, because Jesus took that punishment upon Himself. And all of this is “to be received by faith,” not by works, not by pedigree, not by ritual, but by humble trust in the One who paid it all.
Imagine walking into a courtroom, guilty beyond doubt, and the judge not only declares you innocent but pays your fine from His own pocket. That’s what Jesus did. And God did it publicly, not in secret, so that His righteousness would be made known to all.
Sometimes we carry guilt for past sins, especially ones we’ve tried to bury or forget. But God didn’t overlook those sins, He delayed judgment until the cross, where Jesus absorbed the full penalty. So if you are in Christ, your past is not hidden, it is paid for.
Here are some things you can do today to help you on your journey.
Pause and reflect on what Jesus’ sacrifice means personally for your past, present, and future.
Write down a sin or regret you’ve held onto, and then cross it out boldly with the words: PAID IN FULL BY JESUS.
Share the good news with someone who feels too far gone, remind them that God’s mercy seat is still open.
Read Hebrews 10:19-22 to see how Christ’s sacrifice gives us full access to God’s presence.
Let go of any guilt or shame you’ve been carrying. You’re not defined by your worst moment, you’re defined by Christ’s best: the cross. Stand in faith and declare, “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
Father, thank You for presenting Jesus as the sacrifice of atonement for my sin. I stand in awe of Your justice and mercy displayed on the cross. Help me to receive this gift daily by faith, and to walk in the freedom it brings. May I never forget the price that was paid and may I never stop sharing it with others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
