Unshakable Joy and Eternal Security

04/21/2025

“Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay.”
— Psalm 16:9-10 (NIV)

These words, penned by King David, pulse with both present joy and future hope. At first glance, it’s a song of celebration. A glad heart, rejoicing tongue, a sense of peace in the body. But look closer and you’ll find one of the most prophetic declarations in the Psalms, one that echoes all the way to the empty tomb of Jesus Christ.

David trusted that because God was always before him, his heart could remain joyful even in the face of uncertainty or threat. This wasn’t naive optimism, it was rooted in the unchanging character of God. David had come to know God as his refuge, his portion, and his counselor. And now, even in the face of death, David is confident: “You will not abandon me… You will not let your faithful one see decay.”

Though David spoke this with confidence in God’s care for his life, the full realization of this promise would come through Jesus Christ. Peter, in Acts 2:25-31, explains that David was actually prophesying the resurrection of Jesus, that God would not leave His Holy One in the grave. And because Jesus was not abandoned to death, we won’t be either.

There’s something powerful about that truth. Your joy and security don’t rest in your circumstances. They don’t even rest in your health, your job, or your relationships. They rest in the resurrection power of God. If you belong to Jesus, your eternity is secure. You can live joyfully today knowing that nothing, not even death, can separate you from Him.

Imagine standing at the bedside of a believer nearing the end of life. With tear-filled eyes, you might expect fear or despair. But often, you’ll see peace, sometimes even joy. Why? Because their body can rest secure. Their soul is anchored in the unshakeable promise that they will not be abandoned.

This is a daily invitation to us: live as people whose eternity is already settled. Let your heart be glad. Let your words reflect praise. Let your body rest in the security of God’s care, because Jesus has gone before you and conquered the grave.

Here are a few things you can do today to align yourself with God’s word.

Speak Praise Today
Just as David’s tongue rejoiced, take a few moments to verbally thank God today. Out loud. Let your voice reflect your faith.

Reflect on Your Security
Write down a list of things that cause you anxiety or fear. Next to each one, write “But I will not be abandoned.”

Encourage Someone Facing Uncertainty
Share this passage with someone who needs to be reminded that they are not alone, not forgotten, not left in the dark.

Let your joy today be based not on what you feel but on what you know. God is with you, God is for you, and God will never abandon you.

Father, thank You for the security I have in You. Because of Jesus, my heart can be glad and my body can rest secure. Remind me today that I am never alone—not in life, not in death, not in anything. Help me to live with joy and speak with praise, trusting You fully. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
