Set Your Heart on Things Above

“Since then you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.”
– Colossians 3:1 (NIV)
When we accept Christ as our Savior, we undergo a spiritual resurrection. Our old self, tied to sin and worldly desires, is replaced with a new identity in Christ. Colossians 3:1 calls us to live in alignment with this new reality by shifting our focus from earthly distractions to heavenly priorities.
In his writing, Paul urges us to “set our hearts on things above,” he is reminding us of the profound transformation that happens when we belong to Christ. Being “raised with Christ” is not just a theological concept—it is a new way of life. This verse challenges us to look beyond the physical and visible, to fix our gaze on the eternal and spiritual.
This world is filled with distractions: financial pressures, societal expectations, and the constant pull of culture to define our worth by what we achieve or possess. Yet, as followers of Christ, our identity is not rooted in the temporary, but in the eternal. Setting our hearts on things above means choosing to live with an eternal perspective, to focus on Christ’s lordship and the promises of heaven, even in the midst of daily life.
Think of Christ, seated at the right hand of God. This image is one of victory, authority, and peace. It reminds us that He reigns over all, and His power is available to help us live out our faith. By focusing on Him, we can rise above earthly struggles and live with joy, purpose, and hope.
This verse also serves as a reminder of our spiritual citizenship. While we live in this world, we are no longer of it. Our true home is with Christ in heaven. Therefore, every decision we make, every word we speak, and every action we take should reflect the values of His Kingdom.
Here are a few example son how you can incorporate this into your daily life.
Evaluate Your Priorities
Take a moment to assess where your heart’s focus has been. Are you consumed by the pursuit of temporary success or overwhelmed by earthly concerns? Shift your perspective by aligning your goals with God’s eternal plan.
Daily Recalibration
Begin your day by intentionally “looking up” through prayer and Scripture reading. Ask God to guide your heart toward His will and keep you mindful of His presence throughout the day.
Seek What Lasts
In moments of decision-making or stress, pause to consider how your choices align with God’s Kingdom. Are you investing in what will fade or what will endure?
Today, choose one earthly concern or distraction that has been weighing on you. Surrender it to God in prayer, and replace it with a heavenly focus—whether it’s serving someone in need, meditating on His Word, or sharing the love of Christ with someone around you.
Heavenly Father, thank You for raising me to new life in Christ. Help me to set my heart on things above, where You reign in majesty and glory. Teach me to let go of the distractions of this world and to focus on Your eternal purposes. Fill me with Your Spirit so that my thoughts, actions, and desires reflect Your Kingdom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
