No Greater Love

“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
— John 15:13 (NIV)

Love is often measured in words, gestures, and time, but Jesus gives us the ultimate standard: sacrifice. In this single verse, He reveals the depth of His love not just in sentiment, but in action. This wasn’t just a nice thought or an inspiring quote, it was a prophecy of what He was about to do. Jesus would literally lay down His life for His friends… for us.

Think about that. The Son of God called us His friends, and in doing so, He rewrote the meaning of friendship forever. Unlike relationships that are based on convenience or mutual benefit, Jesus’ love is unconditional and sacrificial. His love cost Him everything, and He gave it willingly.

Consider a soldier who dives on a grenade to save his unit. Or a firefighter who runs into a burning building to rescue someone they’ve never met. These stories stir our hearts because they mirror the sacrificial love Jesus showed on the cross. His love wasn’t abstract, it was nailed down in blood and agony for the sake of you and me.

But this verse also presents a challenge to us. Jesus calls us to love like He loved. While we may never be asked to physically die for someone, we’re called to lay down our lives in other ways, by putting others first, sacrificing our comfort, offering forgiveness, giving when it hurts, or standing beside someone when everyone else walks away.

Are we willing to love like that?

Here are some ways you can learn to love like Jesus loved, laying down your life for others.

Reflect
Ask yourself who in your life needs to experience this kind of sacrificial love today.

Reach Out
Make a phone call, send a message, or visit someone who may feel forgotten or overlooked.

Serve
Do something today that costs you something—your time, comfort, or resources—in order to love someone well.

Pray
Ask the Lord to help you love more like Him and to see others through the lens of His friendship.

Identify one person you can actively love through sacrifice today. It could be through listening, forgiving, giving, or simply being present. Let Christ’s love shape how you love them.

Jesus, thank You for calling me Your friend and proving it through the cross. Your love is deeper and more powerful than I can fully comprehend. Help me not to take that sacrifice for granted. Teach me to love others like You loved me—sacrificially, selflessly, and with joy. Fill me with Your Spirit, so that I can reflect Your heart to those around me. Amen.
