The Joy of Magnifying God

12/20/2024

“And Mary said: ‘My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.’”
— Luke 1:46-47 (NIV)

Mary’s song, often called the Magnificat, is one of the most profound expressions of worship in Scripture. These words flowed from Mary’s heart as she visited Elizabeth, carrying the news of the Messiah within her womb. It’s a declaration of praise that overflows from a deep understanding of who God is and what He has done.

Mary’s response to the overwhelming news of being the mother of the Savior was not fear or doubt but worship. She magnified the Lord—not because her life was easy or without challenges, but because her focus was fixed on God’s faithfulness. She recognized her Savior’s hand in her life, fulfilling promises made to His people.

Her words teach us something profound about worship. To “magnify the Lord” means to make His name great, to elevate Him above our circumstances, and to place the spotlight on His character and deeds. It’s not that we make God bigger than He is, but we shift our perspective to see Him as He truly is—majestic, holy, and mighty.

Mary also rejoiced in “God my Savior,” emphasizing the personal nature of her relationship with Him. Despite her humble position, Mary knew she was loved and chosen by God. Her joy was rooted in salvation, the greatest gift anyone can receive.

Here are three ways that you can learn to react the same way as Mary.

Shift Your Perspective

Spend time today reflecting on who God is. How can you magnify Him in your life?

Choose Joy in the Savior

Like Mary, rejoice in your salvation. Let the knowledge of what Christ has done for you bring you renewed hope and joy.

Respond in Worship

Whether through song, prayer, or an act of kindness, express your gratitude to God today.

Heavenly Father, I thank You for the example of Mary’s faith and worship. Help me to magnify You in my life, no matter my circumstances. Fill my heart with joy as I reflect on Your goodness and salvation. May my soul glorify You today and always. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
