The Power of the Holy Spirit

12/19/2024

“The angel answered, ‘The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.’”
– Luke 1:35 (NIV)

In Luke 1:35, we find Mary, a young virgin, grappling with the angel Gabriel’s announcement that she will conceive and give birth to the Son of God. Her question, “How will this be?” is met with an answer that transcends human understanding: the Holy Spirit will come upon her, and the power of God will make the impossible, possible.

This moment is not only about Mary but also about God’s character. He works through His Spirit to accomplish what we cannot. The phrase “the power of the Most High will overshadow you” speaks of divine protection, intimacy, and God’s ability to fulfill His purposes through willing vessels.

When God calls us to something extraordinary, our initial reaction might be to focus on our limitations. Like Mary, we might wonder, “How can this happen?” Yet, the same Spirit that overshadowed Mary is available to us today, equipping and empowering us to do His will.

This passage is a reminder that God doesn’t rely on our abilities but on His power. What He promises, He also fulfills. Mary’s obedience to the divine plan brought forth Jesus, the Savior of the world. What could God accomplish through your obedience?

Today, I challenge you to truly consider the following three things.

1. Reflect on a situation where God is calling you to trust Him despite your doubts.

2. Ask the Holy Spirit to fill you with His power and to guide you in obedience to God’s will.

3. Share with someone how God has worked through your weaknesses to accomplish His purposes.

Remember, the same Spirit that moved in Mary’s life is alive and active in yours today. Will you let Him work through you?

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your Holy Spirit who empowers us to do what seems impossible. Help us to trust in Your promises and surrender to Your will, even when we don’t fully understand Your plans. May our lives bring glory to You, just as Mary’s obedience brought forth the Savior. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
