Treasures of the Heart

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
– Matthew 6:21 (NIV)
Our lives are shaped by what we value most. Jesus’ words in Matthew 6:21 challenge us to examine what truly holds our attention, affection, and devotion. The “treasure” He speaks of isn’t limited to material wealth; it encompasses everything we prioritize, whether possessions, relationships, goals, or achievements.
Treasures are not inherently bad, God gives us good gifts to enjoy. However, they become problematic when they displace God as the central focus of our lives. Jesus invites us to a higher calling: to invest in eternal treasures. These are treasures stored in heaven, like acts of kindness, sharing the gospel, loving others, and living obediently to His will.
Take a moment to evaluate: What do you treasure most? Your answer reveals the direction of your heart. If your treasure lies in fleeting things, money, success, or approval, your heart will chase after them, often leaving you restless and unsatisfied. But if your treasure is God and His kingdom, your heart will find lasting peace and fulfillment.
Here are three things you can work on today to help you focus on Kingdom wealth.
Examine Your Priorities
Write down your top three treasures. Ask yourself if they align with God’s values.
Invest in Eternal Things
Commit to one action today that focuses on eternal treasure. It could be encouraging someone, spending time in prayer, or giving generously.
Guard Your Heart
Pray for discernment to recognize anything that competes with God for your affection.
Spend 15 minutes today reflecting on how you spend your time, money, and energy. Ask yourself, “Am I investing in things that will last forever?” Adjust where needed to prioritize God’s eternal treasures.
Lord, You are my greatest treasure. Help me to store up treasures in heaven by seeking Your kingdom and living for Your glory. Align my heart with Your purposes, and teach me to value what truly matters. In Jesus’ name, amen.
