Stand Firm
4/3/2024
“Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.” - Ephesians 6:13 (ESV)
In the spiritual battle of life, we are called not to cower in fear or retreat but to stand firm in the strength of the Lord. Just as a soldier prepares for battle by putting on armor, we are urged to put on the full armor of God.
Each piece of armor represents a spiritual truth and a tool for our defense. The belt of truth reminds us to walk in honesty and integrity. The breastplate of righteousness guards our hearts against the attacks of the enemy. The shoes of the gospel of peace equip us to bring peace wherever we go. The shield of faith deflects the fiery arrows of doubt and fear. The helmet of salvation protects our minds with the assurance of our salvation in Christ. And the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, is our offensive weapon against the schemes of the devil.
But notice, after putting on the armor, we are not told to charge forward into battle but to stand firm. Standing firm requires perseverance, determination, and trust in God’s power. It means remaining steadfast in the face of adversity, holding onto our faith even when the storms of life rage around us.
I want you to also see that the armor you put on is forward facing, designed for battle not retreat. If you turn and run your back is exposed and the enemy has clear access to you. There is no protection if you run.
In the middle of life’s trials and temptations, let us not forget that victory is already assured through Christ. By putting on the armor of God daily, we can withstand the attacks of the enemy and stand firm in the truth of God’s promises. So, let us take up our armor with confidence, knowing that God is with us, and let us stand firm, for in Him, we are more than conquerors.
May we be strengthened by the truth of God's word, protected by His righteousness, and empowered by His Spirit. And may we always remember that in Christ, we have the victory over the enemy, and we can stand firm in His strength and power.
