Called to Serve in Freedom

04/12/2025

“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.”
- Galatians 5:13 (NIV)

Freedom is a precious gift. And in Christ, it’s more than political liberty or personal autonomy, it’s the spiritual release from sin and the law. Paul reminds the believers in Galatia that their new life in Christ is not a license to do whatever they please, but an opportunity to live out a higher calling.

Imagine someone being released from prison after a long sentence. They now have the ability to go wherever they want, see whoever they choose, and rebuild their life. But what if they used that freedom to harm others or fall back into old habits? Their freedom would become just another form of bondage.

Paul is warning us against that kind of misuse. The freedom we have in Christ isn’t meant for self-indulgence, but for self-giving. It’s the kind of freedom that compels us to put others first, not out of obligation, but out of love.

Think about Jesus as our perfect example. Though He was God, He humbled Himself and served. He washed feet. He fed the hungry. He gave His life for others. That’s the kind of freedom we’re called to embrace, not to elevate ourselves, but to lift others up.

We often ask, “What am I free to do?” But the better question is, “What am I free to give?”
Freedom in Christ shifts our focus from rights to responsibilities, from self to service.

Maybe there’s someone in your life who needs a kind word, a helping hand, or simply to be seen. Serving in love doesn’t require a platform, just a willing heart.

Here are a few things you can do to go from delivered to free.

Reflect
Where have you been using your freedom selfishly instead of lovingly?

Reach Out
Serve someone today. A neighbor, coworker, or family member, in a simple, tangible way.

Pray
Ask God to show you where your love can make a difference.

Journal
Write about a time when someone served you humbly in love. How did it impact you?

Find one way to serve someone today without expecting anything in return. Whether it’s through words, time, or resources, choose love over convenience.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the incredible freedom I have through Jesus. Help me not to waste it on selfish desires, but to use it to love and serve others. Teach me what it means to walk in humility and to see those around me with compassion. May my life reflect Your heart of service today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
