Fearless Forward
11/16/2024
“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”
- Deuteronomy 31:8 (NIV)
As Moses prepared to hand over leadership to Joshua, he gave the Israelites this profound assurance. Facing an uncertain future, the people needed to know that God wasn’t sending them into the Promised Land alone. He was not only with them but going before them to prepare the way.
This verse speaks directly to moments of fear and discouragement—the times when we feel overwhelmed by challenges or unsure about the next step. God promises His presence in every trial and transition. Whether you’re stepping into a new job, a tough relationship, or a season of change, this verse reminds us that we never go alone.
Here are three steps you can take to make this a reality in your life.
Recognize God Goes Before You.
Imagine you’re about to hike a difficult trail for the first time. How comforting would it be if someone had already scouted the path, cleared obstacles, and marked the way? That’s what God does for us. For instance, if you’re starting a new job, trust that God is already working in the hearts of your coworkers and setting the stage for you to succeed.
Rely on His Presence.
When we’re afraid or discouraged, we often forget that God is with us in the moment. Consider a child learning to ride a bike. The presence of a parent, running alongside, gives the child confidence. Similarly, God is right beside you, steadying you when you feel wobbly.
Reject Fear and Discouragement.
Fear often paralyzes us, while discouragement tempts us to quit. But God’s promise allows us to press on. Perhaps you’ve been called to start a ministry, lead a team, or confront a personal challenge. Instead of focusing on what could go wrong, focus on who is leading you—God, who never fails.
Examples from Everyday Life:
A young woman starting college in a new city clings to this verse, trusting that God is paving the way for friendships, opportunities, and growth.
A father facing a medical diagnosis remembers God’s promise to never leave him, finding courage to move forward despite the unknown.
A couple stepping into foster care prays this scripture, believing that God is ahead of them, working in the lives of the children they will welcome.
This promise isn’t conditional, it’s grounded in God’s unchanging character. He will never leave or forsake you. When you feel afraid or discouraged, anchor yourself in this truth. Take heart in knowing the Creator of the universe is walking with you and leading the way.
Today, pause and reflect: What challenges are you facing right now? How does knowing God is with you and ahead of you change your perspective?
Lord, thank You for the promise that You go before me and are always with me. When I feel afraid or discouraged, remind me of Your presence and Your power. Help me to trust You with every step I take, knowing that You are faithful and true. Strengthen me to move forward with courage, trusting in Your unfailing love. Amen.
