Strengthened in the Inner Being

“I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being.”
— Ephesians 3:16 (NIV)
Paul’s prayer in Ephesians 3:16 highlights the divine source of our inner strength. Often, we focus on external sources for strength, like support from friends, financial security, or career achievements. But Paul prays that God will strengthen believers “in (their)inner being.” This strength isn’t simply physical or even emotional; it’s a spiritual resilience rooted in God’s abundant riches. God’s Spirit empowers us from within, giving us a foundation to endure any circumstance, joy or sorrow.
What Is Our “Inner Being”?
Our inner being is the deepest part of who we are, our soul and spirit. It’s where our thoughts, beliefs, and core values reside. When life gets tough, it’s our inner being that carries us. Have you ever seen someone go through a tremendous loss or challenge and yet remain steady, full of peace? That’s the Spirit of God strengthening them from within.
What Are God’s Glorious Riches?
Paul doesn’t just say God will strengthen us, but that He’ll do so out of His “glorious riches.” Imagine someone wealthy giving you a gift, they have no limits, and neither does God. His “glorious riches” aren’t material things but His grace, love, and power. When you feel empty, discouraged, or worn out, God’s resources are available to fill and fortify you.
Consider those moments when you feel drained or overwhelmed by life’s pressures. Maybe it’s the demands of work, family, or a difficult relationship. Instead of relying on sheer willpower, pause and ask God to strengthen you through His Spirit.
For example, think of a single parent juggling multiple responsibilities. When she prays for strength, God empowers her from within, providing endurance beyond human limitations. Or consider someone battling a chronic illness. The Spirit provides a wellspring of hope, peace, and courage that no external support can fully offer.
When your outer world feels chaotic, remember: God’s Spirit can bring peace and power to your inner world. Seek His strength within, and He will sustain you.
Lord, thank You for Your limitless resources. I pray that You strengthen me through Your Spirit in my inner being. Fill me with a resilience that rises above circumstances. Help me to rely on You and not on my own strength. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
