The Overflowing Gift of the Spirit
12/08/2024
“For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without limit. The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands.”
- John 3:34-35 NIV
In these verses, John the Baptist is describing the unmatched greatness of Jesus, the One sent by God. Unlike anyone else, Jesus speaks the very words of God because He comes directly from Him. The most remarkable truth in this passage is that God gives His Spirit without limit. Unlike in the Old Testament, where the Spirit was often given to individuals temporarily or for specific purposes, Jesus has been given the fullness of the Spirit to carry out God’s eternal plan.
Even more, the Father’s love for the Son is highlighted in His complete trust. By placing everything in Jesus’ hands, the Father affirms Jesus’ authority over all creation, salvation, and the future of humanity.
As believers, we are invited into this relationship through faith in Jesus. While we may not have the Spirit in the same limitless way Jesus does, we are blessed with the Spirit’s presence, power, and guidance in our lives. This truth reassures us that we can trust in the sufficiency of Christ’s authority and the abundance of His Spirit to help us in every situation.
Here are a few things we can do so that we can live this way each and every day.
Embrace the Word
Spend time meditating on Scripture, knowing that Jesus speaks the very words of God. Ask the Holy Spirit to bring clarity and understanding.
Rely on the Spirit
Reflect on areas in your life where you need the Spirit’s help. Pray for His limitless power to guide you, strengthen you, and comfort you.
Trust in Christ’s Authority
Surrender your fears and uncertainties to Jesus, trusting that He holds all things in His hands.
Throughout the day, remind yourself of this truth: The Spirit is not limited in my life. Lean into the Spirit’s power as you face challenges, make decisions, or share God’s love with others.
Lord, thank You for sending Jesus to speak Your truth and for giving Him the fullness of Your Spirit. Help me to rely on Your Spirit in every area of my life, knowing that through Christ, I have access to Your power and guidance. Teach me to trust in the authority of Jesus and to walk in obedience to His Word. Amen.
