Humility and Trust in God

“Humility is the fear of the Lord; its wages are riches and honor and life.”
– Proverbs 22:4 (NIV)
In today’s fast-paced world, we often find ourselves chasing success, status, and wealth. But Proverbs 22:4 reminds us that true “riches and honor and life” come not from the pursuit of earthly gains, but from the humble reverence and awe we have for God. The “fear of the Lord” here isn’t about being afraid of God but is instead a profound respect, trust, and acknowledgment of His sovereignty in our lives.
Think of it this way; there are two people, one who strives tirelessly for success on their own terms, and another who diligently works but trusts all their efforts and outcomes to God. The first may achieve some level of wealth or prestige but often struggles with inner peace. The second may or may not attain material riches, but they experience peace, purpose, and joy that the first person may never know.
Living in humility before God means we recognize that all we have comes from Him. It’s the understanding that our talents, opportunities, and even our breath are gifts from a loving Creator. When we start each day by seeking His guidance, we’re displaying humility. When we make decisions that honor Him, even at personal cost, we’re embracing humility.
How about you? When faced with a challenging decision, do you react impulsively or solely based on your own judgment? I suggest always pausing to pray and seek God’s wisdom. By prioritizing His will over our desires, we’re living out humility and honoring His role as our Shepherd and Guide.
The verse promises “riches and honor and life” to those who walk in humility. While this isn’t a guarantee of material wealth, it points to a deeper richness, one that includes peace of mind, meaningful relationships, and the satisfaction of a life lived with purpose. Those who humble themselves before God are often blessed with a perspective that values eternal treasures over temporary gains.
Here are some ways you can start to embrace this in your own life.
1. Start each morning by thanking God for your gifts and asking for wisdom to use them for His glory.
2. When tempted to rely solely on your own strength or wisdom, take a moment to pray and acknowledge God’s sovereignty.
3. Seek opportunities to serve others, knowing that true greatness in God’s eyes is often found in humility and service.
Think of one or two areas in your life where you’ve been trying to control everything on your own. Surrender it to God, trusting that His wisdom and timing are perfect.
Lord, teach us the beauty of humility. Help us to live each day in awe of You, recognizing that every blessing comes from Your hand. May we seek Your will over our own and find joy in serving others as You have served us. Grant us the true riches of peace, honor, and a life that reflects Your love. Amen.
