Putting on God’s Love

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.”
— Colossians 3:12 (NIV)
As God’s chosen and beloved, we’re called to live in a way that reflects His character to the world around us. Colossians 3:12 reminds us that we are set apart and deeply loved, which gives us a foundation to show compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. These aren’t just good traits—they’re essentials that mark us as followers of Christ.
Imagine getting dressed each day in this “spiritual wardrobe.” When we wake up, it’s an opportunity to put on compassion instead of indifference, kindness instead of self-centeredness, humility rather than pride, gentleness over harshness, and patience instead of frustration. Each piece helps shape our character and affects those we encounter.
Here are five things you can do to learn how to daily, “Put on God’s Love.”
1. Start Your Day with Prayer: Before you even get out of bed, ask God to fill you with His Spirit, enabling you to show compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience throughout the day.
2. Choose One Quality to Focus On: Each day, try to focus on one of these qualities. For example, if you choose kindness, look for ways to help, encourage, or uplift someone who may need it.
3. Respond Rather Than React: When faced with a challenging person or situation, pause before you speak or act. Think of how Jesus would respond—with gentleness and patience—and follow His example.
4. Cultivate Empathy: Practice seeing others as God sees them. When someone irritates or offends you, remind yourself that they, too, are dearly loved by God.
5. Reflect at the End of Each Day: In the evening, ask yourself if you embodied these qualities and where you might improve. This daily reflection will help you grow in Christ-like character over time.
So today, look for one specific opportunity to demonstrate kindness or compassion to someone in your life.
Lord, thank You for choosing us, loving us, and calling us Your own. Help us to clothe ourselves with the qualities that reflect Your heart: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Let our actions and attitudes point others to You, and may our lives be a witness to Your love and grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
