Close to the Brokenhearted

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
- Psalms 34:18 (NIV)
Have you ever experienced a moment when your heart felt like it was shattered into a million pieces? Whether it’s the loss of a loved one, the end of a cherished relationship, or a deep disappointment that shook you to your core, the pain can feel unbearable. During these moments, it’s easy to feel alone, abandoned even. But Psalm 34:18 brings a powerful message of hope and comfort: God is close to the brokenhearted.
The Nearness of God
The first part of this verse reminds us that the Lord is close to those who are brokenhearted. In our most fragile, tear-filled moments, God isn’t distant. He doesn’t watch from afar as we struggle. He draws near. His presence is a source of strength and peace even when the world feels chaotic.
Think of Jesus, who wept at the tomb of Lazarus (John 11:35). Even though He knew He would raise Lazarus from the dead, He was moved by the grief of those around Him. In the same way, God doesn’t ignore or downplay your pain. He draws near with compassion.
Take someone who looses their spouse in a sudden accident Their faith may be shaken, but in their most sorrowful moments, they find comfort in praying and simply crying out to God. Even when they didn’t have words, they can feel an indescribable peace come over them, as though God Himself was holding them close. That’s the nearness this verse promises.
Healing for the Crushed Spirit
The second half of Psalm 34:18 tells us that God saves those who are crushed in spirit. It acknowledges the depth of suffering—being crushed in spirit is more than just feeling sad; it’s feeling like you can’t go on. It’s the kind of pain that strips away your hope. But God’s promise is that He doesn’t just leave us in that state; He saves us. He restores, heals, and lifts us out of that dark place.
Sometimes, God’s saving grace comes through small, tender moments—a kind word from a friend, a scripture that speaks directly to your pain, or the courage to take one more step when you thought you couldn’t. Other times, it comes through a profound healing of your heart over time. Either way, God’s rescue is sure.
I remember a time when I lost my job unexpectedly. For months, I was crushed, depressed and feeling like he had no value. But during that season, I started to spend more time reading the Bible, meditating on God’s promises, and praying. Over time, I felt my spirit lift, and though my external circumstances hadn’t changed, I found renewed strength and purpose. Eventually, a new job opportunity came, but it was God’s saving hand during his brokenness that truly sustained me.
If you’re feeling brokenhearted or crushed in spirit today, know that God is near. Lean into His presence. He is not indifferent to your pain but is right there with you, ready to bring comfort and healing. You don’t have to go through this alone. Sometimes, the greatest miracle is simply experiencing the presence of God in the midst of your sorrow.
How can you invite God into the areas of your heart where you are feeling broken or crushed today? What steps might you take to draw near to Him as He promises to draw near to you?
Heavenly Father, I thank You that You are close to the brokenhearted. I ask that You draw near to me in my pain and save me when I feel crushed in spirit. Help me to feel Your presence and to trust in Your comfort and healing. I know that You are a God who sees me, loves me, and will not leave me in my suffering. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
