Committing It All To God

“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” - Proverbs 16:3 (NIV)
In life, we all face decisions, big and small. Sometimes it’s about career moves, other times it might be decisions about family, finances, or ministry. No matter the decision, Proverbs 16:3 gives us a principle for success: commit everything to the Lord.
What Does It Mean to Commit to the Lord?
To “commit” in this context means to entrust something fully into God’s hands, releasing control over it. It’s like rolling the weight of your plans, work, and desires onto Him, trusting He will guide your steps. It’s not a passive action but an intentional, conscious decision to involve God in every part of your life.
Imagine you’re planning a business project, and it’s something you’ve worked on for months. You’ve drawn up a strategy, consulted experts, and now you’re about to move forward. Committing your work to God is bringing those plans before Him in prayer, asking for His wisdom, and being willing to shift your direction if He prompts you to.
One example of this in the Bible is Nehemiah. When he heard about the ruined walls of Jerusalem, he felt a burden to do something. But instead of acting immediately on his feelings, he committed his plans to God. Nehemiah prayed and sought God’s favor before going to the king to request permission to rebuild the walls. The result? God established his plans. He received the king’s blessing and successfully led the project (Nehemiah 1-2).
How Does God Establish Our Plans?
This can sometimes be hard to understand. Nothing will really work out if we first don’t commit our ways to God. This is a must in order for Him to establish our plans. However, this doesn’t mean He rubber-stamps everything we want to do. Instead, God aligns our plans with His purpose, and in doing so, brings them to fruition in the best way possible. Sometimes, this means opening doors we didn’t expect. Other times, it may mean closing doors that we thought were essential, redirecting us to something better.
For instance, you might have been praying about a promotion at work. You’re excited and convinced it’s the best thing for your career. But after committing it to God, the promotion goes to someone else. Disappointment may set in, but later, you realize that not getting the promotion allowed you to move into a different role that better aligned with your long-term goals and provided more opportunities for growth. God established your plans in a way you didn’t foresee.
Here are four practical ways to commit your work to God.
Start with Prayer
Before you begin your day or a new project, take time to pray. Ask God for guidance, wisdom, and the strength to follow His direction.
Seek God’s Will in Scripture
Align your plans with His Word. Is what you’re planning consistent with biblical principles? God’s Word is a lamp to guide your steps (Psalm 119:105).
Be Open to God’s Leading
Sometimes, committing your work to the Lord means being flexible when things don’t go as planned. Trust that God is leading you, even when the path seems unclear.
Let Go of Control
One of the hardest things to do is release control over outcomes. Trust God’s timing and His way of establishing your plans, even when it differs from what you imagined.
Now it’s reflection time. What areas of your life do you need to commit to God today? Are there plans or decisions you’re holding onto too tightly? As you release them to the Lord, trust that He will establish your plans, bringing them into alignment with His perfect will.
Heavenly Father, thank You for the wisdom of Your Word. Help me to commit everything I do to You, trusting that You will guide and establish my plans. Give me the grace to let go of control and the faith to follow where You lead. May my work honor You and serve Your purpose. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
