Trusting in God’s Plan
10/07/2024
“Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.”
- Proverbs 19:21 (NIV)
We all make plans, whether it’s mapping out our day, setting career goals, or envisioning our future. We try to chart the course that makes sense to us. However, Proverbs 19:21 reminds us that while we may make many plans, ultimately, it is God’s purpose that stands firm.
This verse challenges us to consider how tightly we hold to our own agendas. We live in a world that values control, self-determination, and personal success. But the Bible teaches that God, in His wisdom and sovereignty, directs the final outcome. This doesn’t mean our plans are irrelevant, but that we must hold them loosely, trusting that God’s purpose is better, even when it differs from our expectations.
Imagine a person who has carefully planned out their career. They’ve worked hard, pursued education, and positioned themselves for success. But suddenly, an unexpected event, like a job loss or a health crisis, disrupts everything. In such moments, frustration and disappointment are natural. Yet, it is often in these disruptions that God redirects our path to something far more significant and aligned with His plan.
A biblical example of this truth is found in the story of Joseph. He was sold into slavery by his own brothers, which surely wasn’t part of his plan. Yet, through years of hardship, God worked through Joseph’s circumstances to fulfill a greater purpose, saving many lives during a famine.
Submit your plans to God
Before making decisions, take time in prayer to seek God’s will. Proverbs 16:3 encourages us, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.”
Trust in the disruptions
When things don’t go according to plan, remind yourself that God is still in control. What may feel like a setback could be His way of aligning your life with His greater purpose.
Keep faith in the bigger picture
Even when we don’t understand how events are unfolding, we can trust in God’s wisdom. Romans 8:28 assures us that “in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
What are you holding onto too tightly today? Perhaps it’s a relationship, career goal, or financial security. Take a moment to surrender it to God, trusting that He knows the best path forward, even if it looks different from what you imagined.
Lord, I surrender my plans to You. I know that while I may set goals and make decisions, Your purpose is what truly prevails. Help me to trust in Your timing and direction, especially when things don’t go the way I expect. Align my heart with Your will, and give me faith to believe that Your plan is far better than anything I could imagine. Amen.
