Growing in Love and Discernment

9/3/2024

"And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ."
- Philippians 1:9-10 (NIV)

Paul’s prayer for the believers in Philippi offers a powerful blueprint for spiritual growth: a love that is both abundant and discerning. In these verses, Paul emphasizes that love is not a static emotion or a simple feeling; it is a dynamic and ever-growing virtue. He prays that this love would be rooted in "knowledge and depth of insight," suggesting that true love is informed and wise, grounded in a deep understanding of God's truth and the realities of life.

Love that is purely emotional can be misguided, but love that is enriched by knowledge and insight knows how to act in every situation. Such love is discerning—it recognizes what is good, pure, and in alignment with God’s will. Paul desires that believers be able to discern what is best so that their lives reflect purity and blamelessness when Christ returns. He reminds us that our spiritual maturity and growth in love are not just for our benefit, but for the glory of God and the good of others.

How do we develop this kind of love? Start by immersing yourself in God’s Word daily, seeking to understand His character and His will for your life. Pray for wisdom and ask God to reveal areas in your life where your love needs to grow in knowledge and insight.

Think about the relationships and situations in your life that may require a deeper kind of love—a love that is both gracious and wise, compassionate yet truthful. Reflect on how you can be more discerning in your actions and decisions, seeking not just what is good, but what is best according to God’s standards.

Love that grows in knowledge and insight is love that can transform lives and bring us closer to God's perfect will.

Today, find one area in your life where you can practice discerning love—whether in a relationship, a decision, or a response to a challenging situation. Seek God’s wisdom, and act with a heart of love informed by His truth.

Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your unfailing love and the example You have set for us in Christ. I pray that my love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so I can discern what is best and live a life that is pure and blameless before You. Help me grow in wisdom, understanding, and love for others in a way that brings glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
