He First Loved Us

7/23/24

"We love because he first loved us." — 1 John 4:19 (NIV)

What a beautiful reminder of the source of our love – God's love for us. We are able to love others because God loved us first. His love is the foundation on which all other love is built. The simplicity and depth of this verse remind us of the fundamental truth of our faith: our capacity to love stems from God's initial and immense love for us. This verse anchors us in the reality that before we even thought of loving God or others, He already loved us. This divine love empowers and compels us to love in return.

As we go about our days, let us remember that we are called to love one another as God has loved us. This means showing kindness, compassion, and forgiveness to those around us. It means putting others before ourselves and seeking to understand and support them in their needs.

When we feel like we are lacking in love or struggling to show love to others, let us turn to God who is the ultimate example of love. He loved us so much that He sent His Son to die for us, so that we may have eternal life. Let us draw on His love and allow it to flow through us to those around us.

Let’s look at a few examples of what this love is really like.

Parental Love

Consider the love parents have for their newborn child. The baby hasn't done anything to earn or deserve love; it simply exists and is loved unconditionally. Similarly, God's love for us is not based on our actions or merits but on His nature and choice. Just as parents' love nurtures and helps their child grow, God's love for us nurtures our ability to love Him and others.

Acts of Kindness

When we perform acts of kindness, such as helping a neighbor or volunteering our time, we are reflecting the love God has shown us. These acts are not just about good deeds; they are an outpouring of the love that God has implanted in our hearts. When we love others, we are mirroring the love we have received from God, making His love visible in the world.

Forgiveness

Forgiveness can be one of the hardest forms of love to practice, especially when we've been deeply hurt. However, when we remember how God forgave us through Christ’s sacrifice, it empowers us to extend forgiveness to others. Our ability to forgive is a direct reflection of the forgiveness and love we have received from God, demonstrating that His love is transformative and powerful.

Today, let us make a conscious effort to love others as God has loved us. Let us be vessels of His love, spreading kindness and compassion wherever we go. And let us give thanks for the incredible gift of God's love that allows us to love others in return.

Heavenly Father, thank You for loving us first. Your love is the foundation of our lives and the source of our strength. Help us to reflect Your love in our daily interactions, through acts of kindness, forgiveness, and unconditional care. May our lives be a testimony to the transformative power of Your love. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
