Embracing the Cross

Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.”
— Luke 9:23-24 (NIV)
Jesus’ words in Luke 9:23-24 call us to a radical form of discipleship. The call to "deny themselves and take up their cross daily" is not just about facing occasional hardships but is a daily commitment to live selflessly for Christ.
To deny oneself means to put aside personal ambitions, desires, and even comforts to follow Jesus' example and teachings. It’s a call to prioritize God’s will over our own, acknowledging that true fulfillment comes from aligning our lives with His purposes.
Jesus is calling us to a life of sacrifice and selflessness. He is asking us to put aside our own desires and ambitions and instead focus on following Him wholeheartedly. Being a disciple of Jesus means surrendering our own will and fully committing ourselves to His will.
Taking up our cross daily involves more than bearing life's burdens; it signifies a willingness to embrace sacrifice and sufferings that come with following Jesus. It’s an invitation to share in His suffering, reflecting His love, grace, and truth in our daily interactions and decisions. We must be willing to endure hardship and suffering for the sake of Christ. It may involve sacrifice, discomfort, and even persecution. But in doing so, we are following in the footsteps of our Savior who gave His life for us.
Jesus also teaches that in seeking to save our own lives by clinging to worldly securities, pleasures and comforts, we risk losing the very essence of life that He offers. Conversely, by willingly surrendering our lives to Him, we discover a deeper, eternal life filled with His presence and purpose. Remember, when we lose our lives for His sake, when we give up everything to follow Him, we will find true life and fulfillment.
Today, reflect on one area of your life where you can practice self-denial and take up your cross. It might be an act of forgiveness, a gesture of love to someone difficult, or surrendering a personal ambition to God. Take a tangible step towards living out this call to discipleship.
Are we willing to deny ourselves, take up our cross daily, and follow Him wholeheartedly? May we be willing to let go of our own desires and ambitions and instead seek to live a life that is pleasing to God. And may we find true life and joy in surrendering ourselves completely to Him.
Lord Jesus, help me to understand what it truly means to follow You. Grant me the strength and courage to deny myself, take up my cross daily, and follow in Your footsteps. May Your love and sacrifice guide my actions and decisions each day. Teach me to lose my life for Your sake, knowing that in You, I find true life. Amen.
