Fixing Our Eyes on the Unseen
6/26/2024
“So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”
— 2 Corinthians 4:18 (NIV)
In our daily lives, it is easy to become consumed with the visible and tangible aspects of our existence, it can be easy to lose sight of what truly matters. We often focus on our immediate circumstances, material possessions, and the problems we can see and touch. However, the Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Corinthians, calls us to a different perspective—one that transcends the visible and temporary and embraces the unseen and eternal.
When we focus on what is seen, we are often left feeling empty and unsatisfied. Material possessions, success, and recognition may bring temporary happiness, but they will eventually fade away. However, when we shift our focus to the unseen, to the eternal things like faith, love, and the promises of God, we find true fulfillment and purpose.
So what does this look like in your daily live?
1. The Temporary vs. The Eternal:
Paul reminds us that what we see is temporary. Our current struggles, successes, and the physical world around us are all fleeting. They are here today and gone tomorrow. In contrast, the unseen—God’s kingdom, His promises, and our future with Him—is eternal. This perspective encourages us to hold loosely to earthly things and to invest our hearts and minds in what truly lasts.
2. Fixing Our Eyes:
To "fix our eyes" suggests a deliberate and sustained focus. It is a conscious choice to look beyond our immediate reality and to trust in God's greater plan. This doesn’t mean ignoring our responsibilities or the realities of life but rather viewing them through the lens of eternity. When we fix our eyes on the unseen, we find hope and strength beyond our circumstances.
3. Living by Faith:
Embracing the unseen requires faith. Faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see (Hebrews 11:1). It’s trusting that God is working behind the scenes, even when we can’t perceive it. This faith anchors us, giving us stability in a world that is constantly changing.
Take a moment to reflect on where your focus lies. Are you consumed with the visible and temporary, or are you looking beyond to the eternal promises of God? Ask God to help you see with eyes of faith, to trust in His unseen work, and to find peace in His eternal plan.
As we go about our daily lives, let us remember to keep our eyes fixed on the things that truly matter. Let us seek to grow in our relationship with God, to love others as He loves us, and to live in a way that reflects His eternal kingdom. May we find joy and peace in knowing that the things of this world are temporary, but the things of God are eternal.
Dear Lord, thank You for reminding me that the visible world is temporary and that Your promises are eternal. Help me to fix my eyes on what is unseen, to live by faith, and to trust in Your greater plan. Give me the strength to navigate the challenges of this life with the hope of eternity in my heart. In Jesus' name, Amen.
