They Will Always Be

"The poor you will always have with you, but you do not always have me." - John 12:8 ESV

In this verse, Jesus acknowledges a timeless truth: the presence of poverty in the world. He doesn't dismiss the issue or diminish its importance but rather highlights the ongoing reality of poverty. In His usual way, Jesus responds to Judas Iscariot's criticism of Mary for pouring expensive perfume on His feet. He reminds Judas that the poor will always be among us. However, He also points to something greater—the limited time He would physically be with His disciples.

In our lives, we encounter various forms of poverty—material, spiritual, emotional. We see injustice, suffering, and lack. Yet, amidst these challenges, Jesus reminds us of His presence. He is the ultimate source of comfort, hope, and provision.

This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing our relationship with Jesus above all else. While caring for the poor and needy is a crucial aspect of living out our faith, we must never lose sight of the fact that Jesus is the most valuable treasure we could ever possess.

While we strive to alleviate poverty and address its root causes, we must also recognize the limitations of our efforts. Poverty may persist, but Jesus remains constant. He calls us to love and serve those in need, following His example of compassion and generosity.

The reality is that we live in a world that is constantly changing and shifting, Jesus remains the one thing, the unchanging rock on which we can always depend. His love, grace, and mercy are eternal and unwavering, and no matter what challenges or trials we may face, He will always be there for us.

Let us hold onto the assurance of Christ's enduring presence as we work towards a world where all can experience the fullness of His love and provision. May we never lose sight of the One who is with us always, offering hope and redemption in every circumstance.

Today, let’s reflect on the significance of Jesus in our lives and strive to keep Him at the center of all that we do. May we never take His presence for granted and always seek to cultivate a deeper, more intimate relationship with Him. And as we go about our day, may we remember that while the poor may always be with us, Jesus will always be with us as well, guiding, comforting, and sustaining us in all things.
