The Patient Love of God

2/6/2024

"The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance." - 2 Peter 3:9 ESV

In a world that thrives on instant gratification, waiting can be a challenging and frustrating experience. We can often find ourselves growing impatient when things don't go according to our plans or when God's promises seem delayed. However, in today’s verse, we are reminded of a fundamental aspect of God's character - His patience.

The apostle Peter is writing to encourage early Christians and remind them that God's timing is not the same as ours. While we may perceive His promises as delayed or slow in coming, God is not bound by our human concept of time. He operates on an eternal scale, perfectly orchestrating His plans and purposes.

Peter begins by assuring us that the Lord is not slow to fulfill His promise as some might think. It is not a matter of God's inability or lack of concern. Instead, it is a demonstration of His divine patience. God's timing is always perfect, and He knows precisely when to bring about His promises in our lives.

We need to remember, it was our imperfections that separated us from God’s perfection. And because of that, we could not have a personal relationship with Him. Knowing that we could not get to Him on our own, God sent Jesus to us to make things right. Jesus did what no one else could do—He lived a perfect life, He died for us, and then He conquered death by coming back to life. It’s His resurrection that led to our reconciliation with God—and that’s good news!

The verse continues, highlighting the heart of God's patience - His desire that none should perish but that all should reach repentance. God's love is all-encompassing, extending to every individual, regardless of their past, mistakes, or sins. He patiently waits, desiring that everyone would turn to Him in repentance and experience the fullness of His grace and salvation.

The patience of God in fulfilling His promises and His desire for all to come to repentance teach us valuable lessons. It reminds us that God's ways are higher than ours. We may not understand the reasons behind His apparent delays, but we can trust that His timing is always perfect. He is not forgetful, nor is He indifferent to our needs. He is working behind the scenes, aligning all things for our ultimate good.

Next, this verse calls us to reflect on our own hearts. Just as God is patient with us, we are called to extend patience and grace to others. We are reminded that each person we encounter is a potential recipient of God's love and forgiveness. Instead of growing frustrated or judgmental, let us strive to be patient, showing the same love and compassion that God has shown us.

Finally, Peter invites us to examine our own response to God's patient love. Are we taking His patience for granted, assuming that we have an endless amount of time to respond? Or are we diligently seeking repentance and surrendering our lives to Him? Let us not delay in turning wholeheartedly to God, for His patience does not guarantee an infinite timeline. Instead, let us respond in gratitude, recognizing the urgency of our need for salvation and the immeasurable love and patience God has extended towards us.

There are people who need the love and hope we have in Jesus. So if Jesus is our Savior, then let’s live like it. Let’s offer our praise to God for who He is, and worship Him through the way we live our lives. Let’s ask Him to help us see how much He loves everyone.

As we patiently wait for God to return, let us purposefully live each day for His glory.

That’s why we’re here.
