May You Have Ears That Hear

"And the Lord came and stood, calling as at other times, 'Samuel! Samuel!' And Samuel said, 'Speak, for your servant hears'" - 1 Samuel 3:10 ESV
In this simple, yet profound verse, we witness a moment in the life of the young prophet Samuel. It is a moment that unveils the beauty of a receptive heart and the power of God's voice. As we dive into this passage, let us open our hearts to hear what God desires to speak to us today.
The verse begins with the Lord coming and standing before Samuel. It is important to note that this was not the first time God called Samuel. The previous verses reveal that Samuel, still a boy, was serving the Lord under the guidance of Eli the priest. However, on this particular occasion, God was about to reveal something deeper to Samuel.
God called Samuel by name, repeating it twice. This repetition emphasizes God's desire to have a personal, intimate relationship with His people. In a world where we often feel like just another face in the crowd, God reminds us that He knows us individually and calls us by name.
Samuel's response is a beautiful demonstration of humility and surrender. He recognizes that God is speaking and declares himself as God's servant, ready to listen to whatever God has to say. Samuel's heart was in a posture of submission, eagerly awaiting the voice of God.
This verse serves as an invitation for us to examine our own hearts. Are we willing to set ourselves apart as servants of God, ready to hear His voice and obey His commands? Do we approach God's presence with an open and receptive heart, acknowledging that He knows us intimately and desires to speak to us?
Often in life, we easily become distracted and miss the voice of God. The noise of the world, the demands of our daily routines, and the temptations that surround us can drown out the gentle whisper of His voice. However, just as God stood before Samuel, He is also present with us today, calling us by name.
Let’s remember that God's voice is worth more than all the noise and distractions of this world combined. His voice brings guidance, comfort, correction, and encouragement. It is through His voice that we find direction for our lives, reassurance in times of doubt, and the strength to overcome challenges.
As we meditate on this verse, let us respond to God with the same humility and surrender as Samuel. Let us declare ourselves as His servants, ready to listen attentively to His voice. May we cultivate a heart that is receptive to His leading, eager to hear His instructions, and obedient to His will.
Today, let us quiet our hearts, tune out the noise of the world, and lean in to hear the voice of our Heavenly Father. May we echo the words of Samuel, saying, "Speak, for your servant hears." In doing so, we will experience the transformative power of God's voice, leading us to a life of purpose, joy, and fulfillment in Him.
