The Savior's Name: "Jesus"
12/25/2023
"‘She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.’" - Matthew 1:21 ESV
Love is a powerful attribute of Advent, it reflects the very nature of God Himself. His love surpasses all human understanding, transcending time and space, reaching into the depths of our brokenness, and offering us redemption and restoration. It is this divine love that moved God to send His only Son into the world, to become Immanuel, God with us. This act of sacrificial love demonstrated the depth of God's desire to reconcile us to Himself.
In today’s verse, we find the angel's message to Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus. The angel reveals not only the miraculous conception of Jesus but also the significance of His name. The name "Jesus" carries profound meaning and offers us a deep understanding of the purpose and mission of our Savior.
The name "Jesus" is derived from the Hebrew name "Yeshua," which means "Yahweh saves" or "Yahweh is salvation." It reveals that Jesus came into the world with a divine mission to rescue humanity from the bondage of sin and reconcile us to God. This name holds within it the promise of salvation and redemption for all who believe in Him.
As we reflect on this verse, let us consider three essential aspects of the name "Jesus":
1. The Promise of Salvation: The name "Jesus" assures us that God's redemptive plan is being fulfilled. He is the fulfillment of countless prophecies and the long-awaited Messiah promised throughout the Old Testament. Jesus came to save us from the power and penalty of sin, offering us eternal life and a restored relationship with our Heavenly Father. This promise of salvation is available to everyone who calls upon His name in faith.
2. The Power to Save: The name "Jesus" carries authority and power. It is not merely a label but a proclamation of His nature and character. Jesus possesses the power to deliver, heal, restore, and transform lives. When we invite Him into our hearts, His saving grace becomes active in our lives, bringing hope, forgiveness, and freedom from the chains of sin. Through His sacrifice on the cross and His victorious resurrection, Jesus conquered sin and death, offering us eternal life through faith in Him.
3. The Personal Connection: The angel instructed Joseph to call the child "Jesus," emphasizing the personal nature of our relationship with the Savior. Jesus desires an intimate and transformative relationship with each one of us. Through His name, we can approach Him boldly, knowing that He understands our struggles, covers our weaknesses, and offers us His love, grace, and mercy. The name "Jesus" reminds us of His accessibility and His desire to be intimately involved in our lives.
Jesus is also the physical display of the immense love God has for us.
This love offers us hope in the midst of despair, forgiveness in the face of guilt, and eternal life in place of eternal separation. Love is the catalyst that transforms our lives, as we respond to God's grace with faith and surrender. It is through His love that we are set free from the bondage of sin and experience the abundant life He promises.
When we reflect on the significance of Jesus' birth, we cannot separate it from the love that propelled His coming. His birth marked the beginning of a love story that would culminate in the ultimate act of love: His sacrificial death on the cross. Jesus willingly embraced the weight of our sins, taking upon Himself the punishment we deserved, all out of love for us.
Let’s draw near to Jesus, embracing the significance of His name. Let us remember the promise of salvation that it holds, the power it possesses, and the personal connection it offers. May His name be on our lips and in our hearts, as we surrender our lives to Him, trusting in His saving grace. And as we grasp the depth of His love and the power of His name, may we share this good news with others, that they too may know the One who saves. May we seek to embody this attribute of love in our interactions with others, pointing them towards the ultimate source of love and salvation, Jesus Christ.
Merry Christmas!
