The Divine Gift of Love
12/24/2023
"And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, 'Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!'"
- Luke 2:13-14 ESV
As we approach the culmination of the Advent season, we focus on the final attribute of God, which is love. Luke 2:13-14 beautifully captures the essence of this divine love manifested in the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. It sheds light on the incredible message the heavenly host proclaimed to the shepherds on that wondrous night.
Imagine, if you will, the scene in Bethlehem. The night sky was pierced with a brilliant light as an angel appeared before the shepherds. But that was not all; suddenly, a multitude of heavenly beings joined the angel, praising and glorifying God. Can you fathom the overwhelming joy and awe that must have filled the hearts of those shepherds? In that moment, they witnessed the extraordinary love of God breaking through the barriers of time and space.
The angelic announcement declared, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!" These words encapsulate the profound love of God, which surpasses human understanding. The birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, brought with it a message of peace and reconciliation between God and humanity. It was a divine act of love, bridging the gap between heaven and earth.
God's love is incomparable and unconditional. It surpasses any love we may experience in our human relationships. It is a love that is sacrificial, selfless, and overflowing with grace. It is a love that compelled God to send His only Son into the world, knowing that Jesus would ultimately give His life on the cross for our salvation.
The birth of Jesus Christ heralded a new era of God's love being poured out upon all people. It is a love that offers forgiveness, redemption, and eternal life. It is a love that transforms hearts, heals brokenness, and brings hope to the hopeless. It is a love that extends beyond our faults and failures, embracing us in our darkest moments.
This Advent season, let us reflect on the overwhelming love of God demonstrated through the birth of Jesus Christ. As we prepare to celebrate His coming, may we be reminded that God's love is not limited to a single season but endures for all eternity. Let us receive this divine love with gratitude, allowing it to flow through us, touching the lives of those around us.
Today, let us join the heavenly chorus in proclaiming, "Glory to God in the highest!" May our lives be a testament to the transformative power of God's love, as we seek to live in peace, unity, and harmony with one another. May we extend love, compassion, and forgiveness to those we encounter, just as God has lavished His love upon us.
