Embracing Advent with Courage and Trust

12/05/2023

"Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you."
- Deuteronomy 31:6 (ESV)

As we enter into the season of Advent, we are reminded of the anticipation and longing for the coming of Christ. This time of preparation is not only a reflection on the birth of our Savior but also an opportunity to renew our faith, hope, and trust in God's promises. Today, let’s dive into Deuteronomy 31:6 and explore how this verse resonates with the spirit of Advent.

In the context of this passage, Moses addresses the Israelites, encouraging them as they prepare to enter the Promised Land. However, his words extend far beyond their immediate circumstances and carry profound significance for us today.

"Be strong and courageous." These words echo throughout Scripture, reminding us that our God is a God of strength and courage. As we eagerly await the celebration of Jesus' birth, we are called to embrace this same strength and courage. Advent is not merely a time of passive waiting; it is an invitation to actively engage with God and His purposes.

During Advent, we may face challenges, uncertainties, or even doubts. Yet, the Lord assures us, "Do not fear or be in dread of them." We can find comfort in knowing that God is with us every step of the way. The birth of Jesus reminds us that God is not distant or uninvolved in our lives; He is Emmanuel, "God with us." Therefore, we need not be afraid, for the One who holds the universe in His hands is by our side.

Advent directs our hearts towards the ultimate promise: God's faithfulness. The verse continues, "He will not leave you or forsake you." This promise is fulfilled in the person of Jesus Christ, who came to reconcile us with our Heavenly Father. His birth, life, death, and resurrection demonstrate God's unwavering commitment to His creation. Advent celebrates the fulfillment of this promise and invites us to trust in God's faithfulness anew.

As we enjoy the beauty of Advent, we need to embrace the call to courageously trust in the Lord. Just as the Israelites faced unknown territories, we may encounter challenges and uncertainties. Yet, we can find solace in the assurance that God has gone before us, accompanying us on our journey.

Let’s remember that Jesus' birth is not only a historical event but also a personal invitation to experience God's love, grace, and faithfulness. May we be strengthened by His presence and emboldened to face any trials that come our way.
