The Hopeful Cry of Advent

12/3/2023

"I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word, I hope."
- Psalm 130:5 ESV

As we embark upon the beautiful season of Advent, we are reminded of the anticipation and longing that filled the hearts of God's people before the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Advent is a time of expectant waiting, a time to focus our hearts and minds on the coming of our Lord, who brings hope, peace, joy, and love into our lives. Today, let us meditate on Psalm 130:5, which beautifully captures the essence of this season, reminding us to wait patiently for the Lord and place our hope in His promises.

"I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word, I hope."

In these few words, the psalmist expresses the depth of their trust in the Lord. Waiting can be a challenging and uncertain experience, especially when we long for answers, relief, or the fulfillment of a promise. But the psalmist demonstrates a profound understanding that true hope and ultimate satisfaction are found in God alone.

During this first Sunday of Advent, as we light the candle of hope, we are reminded that our hope is not in fleeting circumstances or temporary solutions. Our hope is anchored in the unchanging character of our Heavenly Father, who is faithful and true. We can confidently wait for the Lord because His Word assures us of His love, grace, and redemption.

As we reflect on the birth of Jesus, the promised Messiah, we see how God's Word became flesh and dwelt among us, fulfilling every prophecy and promise spoken throughout the ages. This act of divine love and mercy gives us hope beyond measure. Just as God fulfilled His promises in the past, we can trust that He will fulfill every promise He has made to us today and in the future.

Advent invites us to embrace a posture of waiting, not with anxiousness or doubt, but with a steadfast and unwavering hope. It is a time to reflect on God's faithfulness throughout history and to recognize that, even in the midst of our waiting, He is at work. He is orchestrating His perfect plans, aligning everything according to His purposes.

For the next four weeks, may we fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith. Let us wait patiently, not losing heart, for in His Word, we find the hope that sustains us. May we rest in the assurance that our God is near, and He will fulfill His promises in His perfect timing.
