Raised to New Life

3/30/2024

"For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his."
- Romans 6:5 ESV

As we observe Holy Saturday, we stand at the threshold of profound significance. It is a day of waiting, of anticipation, and of reflection on the profound mystery of Christ's descent into death. In the midst of this solemn waiting, let us turn our hearts to Paul’s words in Romans 6:5.

These words capture the essence of Holy Saturday – the union with Christ in his death and the anticipation of sharing in his resurrection. In our journey of faith, we are called to walk alongside Jesus, not only in his triumphs but also in his sufferings. Holy Saturday reminds us that our faith is not confined to the moments of joy and victory but extends to the depths of despair and darkness.

As we think about the words in our verse today, let us contemplate the profound truth it holds for us today. Through baptism, we are united with Christ in his death, buried with him in the waters, symbolizing the putting to death of our old selves – our sins, our selfish desires, and our worldly attachments. But just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so too are we raised to newness of life.

Holy Saturday invites us to enter into the silence of the tomb, to confront the reality of death, both physical and spiritual. It is a day of surrender, of letting go of our own will and placing our trust entirely in God. In the stillness of this day, we are reminded that even in the darkest moments of our lives, God is at work, bringing forth new life from the ashes of death.

As we wait with bated breath for the dawn of Easter morning, let us hold fast to the promise of Romans 6:5 – that just as we have been united with Christ in his death, so too shall we be united with him in his resurrection. Let us embrace this truth with faith and anticipation, knowing that through Christ, death has been conquered, and eternal life awaits all who believe.

May this Holy Saturday be a time of deep reflection and spiritual renewal as we await the glorious resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
