Be Still

"He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.’" — Psalm 46:10 NIV

In the craziness of our daily lives, we often find ourselves caught up in a whirlwind of activities and concerns. One kid to soccer another to band and a third that needs help with homework. We strive to meet deadlines, manage responsibilities, and keep up with the constant demands of life. In the midst of this chaos, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed and disconnected from our spiritual center.

Psalm 46:10 offers a profound yet simple directive: "Be still, and know that I am God." This verse invites us to pause and rest in the presence of the Almighty. It reminds us that we are not in control of everything, and it is okay to let go and trust in God's sovereignty.

To "be still" means to stop striving and to cease our relentless efforts to manage everything on our own. It is a call to surrender our anxieties and fears, acknowledging that God is ultimately in control. This stillness is not merely physical; it is a deep, inner quietness that allows us to experience God's peace and presence.

God is always present, always watching over us, and always ready to guide us through life's challenges. When we take the time to be still and quiet our minds, we can hear His voice speaking to us, comforting us, and guiding us along our journey.

Knowing that He is God involves recognizing His power, authority, and love. It means trusting that He is working for our good, even when we cannot see it. This trust fosters a deep sense of peace, enabling us to face life's challenges with confidence and hope.

Here are four ways today that can help you learn to “Be Still.”

1. Set aside quiet time:
Dedicate a few moments each day to be still before God. Use this time for prayer, meditation, or simply resting in His presence. I choose first thing every morning. I grab a cup of coffee, listen to some worship music, read the word, pray and then write this daily devotional.

2. Release your burdens:
Consciously give your worries and concerns to God. Trust that He will handle them in His perfect way. Always remember that when we feel burdened, we are not where God wants us to be. Trust Him with it, He will prevail.

3. Focus on God's attributes:
Remind yourself of who God is—His power, faithfulness, and love. Let these truths anchor you in moments of stress. Much like the above statement, TRUST that God is and does what He says.

4. Worship and exalt Him:
Spend time in worship, acknowledging God's greatness and exalting Him in your heart and through your actions. He loves when we do this for Him.

Today, I encourage you to take a moment to be still and know that God is with you. Allow yourself to surrender your worries, fears, and doubts to Him, and trust that He will be exalted in all circumstances. Let go of the need to control every aspect of your life, and instead, place your trust in the One who is sovereign over all.

And, as you go about your day, remember that God is always with you, always ready to guide you, and always exalted above all. Take comfort in the knowledge that He is working all things together for your good, and be still in His presence.

Heavenly Father, help me to be still before You. In the midst of my busy life, remind me to pause and recognize Your presence. I trust in Your sovereignty and Your unfailing love. Grant me the peace that comes from knowing You are God and that You are in control. May Your name be exalted in my life and throughout the world. Amen.
