Blessing the Poor, Honoring the Lord
02/25/2025
“Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.”
- Proverbs 19:17 NIV
Generosity is a hallmark of a heart that truly understands the grace of God. Proverbs 19:17 gives us a profound perspective, when we show kindness to the poor, we are not merely giving to a person in need; we are lending to the Lord Himself. Imagine that: every act of compassion, every meal given, every bill covered, and every hand extended in love is seen and valued by God as if it were given directly to Him.
The language of “lending” is significant here. A loan implies a return, a repayment of some kind. But God is no ordinary borrower, His rewards far surpass anything we could imagine. He may not always repay in material wealth, but He blesses us with spiritual richness, deep joy, and a heart that reflects His love.
Jesus reinforced this principle in Matthew 25:40 when He said, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” The way we treat those in need is a reflection of our love for Christ. If we ignore the poor, we ignore Him; if we serve them, we serve Him.
Here are a few ways you can incorporate this into your walk today.
See the Poor Through God’s Eyes
Instead of viewing the poor as a burden, see them as an opportunity to show God’s love. Every need around you is a chance to honor the Lord.
Give Without Expectation
True generosity is not transactional; it flows from a heart that trusts God to provide. Give freely, knowing that your ultimate reward is from Him.
Be Intentional About Helping
Look for ways to make a tangible difference. Support local food banks, offer a meal to someone in need, or contribute financially to ministries that care for the poor.
Teach Your Family Generosity
Model kindness for your children and those around you. Let them see the joy that comes from giving, so they too will cultivate a heart of compassion.
Pray for a Generous Heart
Ask God to soften your heart toward the poor and give you wisdom in how to serve them best.
God does not overlook kindness. Every act of love towards those in need is a deposit into eternity. While the world may measure wealth by accumulation, the kingdom of God measures it by generosity. Today, take a step toward lending to the Lord. Your reward will be far greater than you can imagine.
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the abundant blessings You have bestowed upon us. Open our eyes to see the needs of those around us and soften our hearts to respond with compassion. Grant us the wisdom to act generously, knowing that in serving the poor, we are honoring You. Help us to trust in Your promise that as we lend to those in need, You will reward us according to Your riches in glory. May our lives reflect Your love and grace, bringing hope and assistance to the less fortunate. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
