The Power of Your Words

02/07/2025

“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”
— Proverbs 18:21 (NIV)

Words shape worlds. From the very beginning, God spoke creation into existence. With just His voice, light broke through darkness, order replaced chaos, and life flourished. As beings made in His image, our words carry profound weight. They can build up or tear down, heal or wound, encourage or discourage.

Think about a time when someone’s words lifted you, maybe a kind word of encouragement, a heartfelt affirmation, or a simple “I believe in you.” Those words likely gave you strength to keep going. Now recall a time when harsh words cut deep. Maybe it was an unfair criticism, a careless insult, or a word spoken in anger. Such words can linger, shaping how we see ourselves and others.

Today’s verse reminds us that the words we speak are not neutral; they are seeds that will bear one of two kinds of fruit, either sweet, pure, refreshing life giving fruit or destructive, unhealthy, rotten fruit. A careless word can sow doubt and fear, but a word of faith can inspire someone to rise above their circumstances. The question is: What kind of fruit do your words produce?

Here are a few ways that you can carry out today’s verse.

Speak Life: Make it a habit to encourage others. Look for opportunities to bless someone with your words today. A sincere compliment, a word of gratitude, or an uplifting Scripture can make a difference.

Guard Your Tongue: Before speaking, ask yourself: “Is this true? Is it helpful? Is it kind?” James 1:19 instructs us to be “quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry.”

Use Words to Pray: The most powerful way to use your tongue for life is through prayer. Speak God’s promises over your life and the lives of those around you.

Today, be intentional with your words. Speak blessings, offer encouragement, and let the fruit of your tongue bring life to those around you. Basically, speak to others the way you want to be spoken to.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of words. Help me to use my tongue to speak life and not death. Let my words be a source of encouragement, healing, and hope to those around me. Holy Spirit, guide my speech so that it reflects Your love and wisdom. May I honor You today with the way I speak. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
