Be Still and Know
02/19/2025
“He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.’”
— Psalm 46:10 (NIV)
In a world filled with noise, deadlines, and distractions, stillness often feels like an unattainable luxury. From the moment we wake up, we are bombarded with responsibilities, news updates, and the pressure to keep moving forward. But in today’s verse, God calls us to pause, to stop striving, stop worrying, and simply be still.
This verse is set within a psalm that speaks of chaos: mountains quaking, nations in uproar, waters roaring. Yet, in the middle of turmoil, God commands His people to cease their frantic activity and recognize His sovereignty. This is not just a call to silence but an invitation to trust. When God says, “Be still, and know that I am God,” He is reminding us that He is in control, no matter how overwhelming life may seem.
In Hebrew, the word for “be still” is rapha which means to let go, to slacken, or to release. It is a call to surrender, to loosen our grip on the worries, fears, and self-sufficiency we so often cling to. We are not the ones holding the world together; He is. When we acknowledge this, we can rest in the assurance that God’s plans will prevail.
In this passage God also declares, “I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” His glory is not dependent on our efforts. Whether we are still or striving, He will be glorified. But when we choose to be still before Him, we get the privilege of witnessing His power and presence in a deeply personal way.
Here are a few ways for you to apply this to your life today.
Pause and Reflect
Take a moment today to step away from distractions. Turn off your phone, close your eyes, and just breathe in God’s presence.
Trust in His Sovereignty
What worries are you carrying? Release them into His hands. Surrender does not mean inaction; it means trusting that He is at work even when we cannot see it.
Exalt Him in Your Stillness Worship is not just about singing songs; it is about acknowledging who God is. Meditate on His greatness and give Him the glory He deserves.
Take a deep breath today. Let go. And know that He is God.
Lord, in the midst of my busy life, help me to be still before You. Teach me to surrender my worries and trust in Your perfect will. Remind me that You are God, exalted above all things. May I rest in Your presence and find peace in knowing that You are in control. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
