Walking by the Spirit

“So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”
- Galatians 5:16 (NIV)
Every day, we stand at a crossroads. One path leads us to the desires of the flesh, selfishness, pride, impatience, and indulgence. The other path leads us to the Spirit, love, joy, peace, and self control. Paul’s words in Galatians 5:16 are not just a suggestion; they are a call to a way of life that transforms us from within.
To “walk by the Spirit” means to surrender control, to allow God’s presence to guide our thoughts, actions, and choices. It’s not a one-time decision but a continuous, moment-by-moment dependence on Him. Just as a traveler must watch their steps on a winding path, we must stay alert to the Spirit’s leading, choosing obedience over impulse, faith over fear, and grace over bitterness.
Notice that Paul doesn’t say, “Try harder to avoid sin.” Instead, he gives us a different focus: walk in the Spirit. When we are filled with the Spirit, we don’t have to exhaust ourselves fighting temptation on our own, we simply live under the Spirit’s influence, and the flesh loses its grip. It’s like being so filled with light that darkness has no place to stay.
Here are three things we can do everyday to help us in our journey.
Start your day with the Spirit. Before reaching for your phone or diving into tasks, invite the Holy Spirit to lead you. A simple prayer of surrender can set the tone for your day.
Recognize the battle.
The desires of the flesh don’t disappear overnight. When you feel drawn toward selfishness, frustration, or temptation, pause and ask, “Holy Spirit, what would You have me do instead?”
Walk in step with Him.
The Spirit often speaks through Scripture, godly counsel, and the still, small voice in our hearts. The more we listen and obey, the stronger our spiritual walk becomes.
Let today be a day where you walk in step with the Spirit, trusting that He will guide and sustain you.
Father, I want to walk by Your Spirit today. Help me to recognize when my flesh is trying to take over and to choose Your way instead. Fill me with Your presence so completely that I no longer crave what is not from You. Lead me in every thought, word, and action. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
